Duties
• You will serve as a RESEARCH PHYSICIST in the PRECISE TIME DEPARTMENT, U.S
NAVAL OBSERVATORY, WASHINGTON, D.C.
• You will have expertise in experimental atomic, molecular or optical physics, or expertise in a similar field.
• You will have expertise with diode lasers, narrow-linewidth lasers, and/or optical frequency combs.
• You will have knowledge of atomic clocks.
• You will have knowledge of quantum physics.
• You will have ability to contribute to development of operational optical clocks
Requirements Conditions of Employment
• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

• Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final TOP SECRET security clearance prior to entrance on duty

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test
You will be subject to random testing
Qualifications Basic Requirements:
* Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics
or
* Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound
Experience:
GS-13: In addition to the basic education requirements, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
* Experience performing Frequency and Time Standards conducting research into new types of frequency standards, including their acquisition, construction, development, maintenance, and evaluation.
* Experience performing experimental atomic physics, laser, and optical technology, and high-precision measurements.
* Experience assisting with development, improvement, and implementation of procedures for the processing of data used in the evaluation and operation of standards and their associated time scales.
* Experience researching physics and science that provide the foundation of atomic clocks, frequency standards and time keeping technology, and familiarity with current progress in the field, nationally and internationally.
* Experience with the development of complete and adequate research design for specific problem, based on use of sounds professional judgment in selecting and adapting from available possible methods and techniques those best suited to the immediate problem.
GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirements, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
* Experience performing progressively more responsible assignments.
* Experience working under gradually decreasing supervisory controls until such time as the incumbent is fully qualified to assume the full range of duties and responsibilities.
* Experience conducting research into new types of frequency standards, including their acquisition, construction, development, maintenance, and evaluation.Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: Physics Series 1310 (opm.gov) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social)
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment
