Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) encourages applications for a Residential Service Officer The Residential Services Operations unit (RSO Unit) provides residential security for the detection and enforcement of criminal and policy violations throughout CU Residence Life and Student Affairs campus locations. The RSO conducts active patrols and maintains a visible presence, offering the Police Department a means to actively detect violations and respond more readily to emergency or non-emergency needs in the community. This position will communicate between Residence Life Hall Directors, Resident Advisors (RA's) and night staff, the RSO Sergeant/Officers, Police/Dispatch, Fire, and Medical personnel to ensure both operational and administrative efforts are achieved to the safest degree possible during routine and emergency situations.

The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU Boulder Police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a timely and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Patrol and Detection of Violations

* Patrol exterior grounds associated with campus housing areas on foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols to detect criminal activity and enforce policy violations by taking appropriate action through student conduct referrals, written warnings, administrative citations, and summonses. .
* Foot Patrols will typically be 8 to 10 hours in duration with appropriate break periods, as prescribed by policy.
* Remain safe during contacts with potential violators, including using physical exertion to remove themselves and others from harm in the event of an emergency or harmful incident.
* Communicate and record all interactions by writing detailed reports using law enforcement systems.
* Recognize illegal substances and/or contraband and comprehend takes appropriate measures to interact with police to ensure that engagement occurs in a timely manner.
* Patrol during all weather conditions and extremes and may be exposed to both emergency/non-emergency situations.
* Quickly identify problems, hazards, and threats and then identifies appropriate solutions.

Report Writing and Documentation

* Accurately perceive facts, details, and information presented in a wide variety of ways by real life situations. Consistently writes reports that accurately reflect that information in a professional manner that will be relevant in both civil and criminal proceedings.
* Provide professional testimony at both civil/criminal proceedings regarding their observations and the facts that they investigated.
* Completes reports in the system in a timely manner with very few errors or deficiencies, and in many cases with little supervision and support.
* Use law enforcement technologies including but not limited to radios, computers, and other electronic ticketing, body camera, cell phone, and essential equipment.

Training and Auxiliary Projects

* Participate in opportunities for community engagement such as Coffee with a Cop and student sponsored events. Is required to work for large university events such as football games and concerts at an assigned post.
* Train to maintain operational readiness for a myriad of possibilities while deployed on patrol, special events, or emergency situations.
* Maintain proficiency in public safety skills (i.e. First Responder, CPR/1st Aid, Tourniquet, AED, Incident Command Systems, and other certifications required to maintain an appropriate response to both emergency and non-emergency situations involving threats or actions affecting the life, health, and safety of the community.
* Special Event Security screening processes, etc). Actively participates in special projects and assignments that are consistent with the operational needs of the CUPD and residential community.
* This may include the setup and tear down of equipment such as barricades and signage to provide public safety.

What You Should Know

* This position is designated as both a Campus Security Authority and Essential services.
* Ability to work varying shift work including, daytime, evening, and nighttime periods between the hours of 7pm to 7am (shift duration will vary), work Holidays, and other required dates/times that are common to a Police Department operating 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.
* Work Special Event Assignments and Emergency assignments in support of the Police Department, sometimes with little advanced notice.

What We Can Offer

* The salary for this position is $55,380 - $58,749.66 annually.
* Shift differential is available, as follows:
* Second shift differential is 7.5% (Shall be paid for all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled work hours fall between 4pm and 11pm, Monday through Thursday).
* Third shift differential is 14% (Shall be paid for all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled work hours fall between 11pm - 6am, Monday through Friday).
* Weekend shift-differential is 20% (Shall be paid for all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled work hours fall between 4pm - 6am, Friday through Monday).
* If hours are evenly split between shifts, the higher shift differential rate applies to all hours worked during the shift.

* The incumbent must be able to successfully pass elements of the hiring process that include a full detailed background/personal investigation, a phase I psychological suitability test, a polygraph, an integrity interview, and drug screen. The polygraph will entail disclosure of drug usage and use of illegal substances (including marijuana) could result in disqualification. Additionally, if a conditional job offer is extended, the candidate may also undergo a Phase II psychological exam, a medical exam and a home visit.
* Must complete and maintain all training requirements and policy requirements to obtain a limited commission within the City of Boulder. The commission will be granted to issue City of Boulder Municipal summonses, for violations including underage alcohol possession, and possession and/or sale of marijuana.

What We Would Like You to Have

* Previous experience in loss prevention, criminal justice, military, law enforcement, corrections, or other sensitive security services, especially in an educational environment.
* Ability to conduct investigations and complete detailed reports.
* An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree or higher is preferred but not required.
