OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Safe Place is a national program that provides access to immediate help and supportive resources for young people in crisis through a network of sites sustained by qualified agencies, trained volunteers, and businesses. Volunteer drivers are responsible for responding to youth crisis calls from Looking Glass' emergency shelter, Station 7. Once contacted, the volunteer meets the youth at one of a number of Safe Place sites, and transports the youth to Station 7 where staff will coordinate or provide needed services. This is a highly rewarding on-call position, and doesn't require a major time commitment. Volunteers can expect to receive 0-3 transportation requests a month during hours when buses aren't running.

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS:

* Availability: Desire a minimum 1-year commitment
* Driver's License: Valid Oregon Driver License with at least two years experience, acceptable record, and insurability under the Agency's auto insurance.
* Must have a vehicle with operable seat belts.
* Minimum 21 years of age.
* Successful completion of a background check.
* Genuinely concerned about youth in crisis
* An interest in assisting runaway and homeless youth and their families.
* A willingness to understand to respect people from diverse backgrounds.
* Ability to:
* Ability to follow Looking Glass and Station 7 policies and procedures.
* Ability to act as a positive role model.
* Problem solving, communication, and decision-making skills.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality.
* Professional appearance appropriate to the position.
* Commitment to Looking Glass Mission and Values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

* Respond to a crisis call
* Meet youth at a Safe Place site
* Assess, with Station 7, a crisis situation
* Drive youth, if needed, to station 7
* Understanding and adherence to client/staff boundaries and confidentiality.

Due to the nature of the safe Place program, youth who are being transported might be in a state of distress. Drivers are not expected to engage in crisis de-escalation, and if youth are in crisis and need support drivers are encourage to help the youth connect with the Station 7 crisis line. As well, drivers will be expected to present state issued identification when arriving at a Safe Place site. We use the ID # as the identifying information. This is to ensure that youth are not being picked up by someone not affiliated with the Safe Place program.
