Summary:
The float nurse is responsible for providing nursing services to students and staff members to maximize health, wellness, and safety in the school community in the absence of, or in addition to, the designated building school nurse.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned
- Carries out the daily duties of the school nurse including but not limited to:
- Manages health room visits by intervening with actual and potential health problems, providing care for students who become ill, injured, or seek other attention from the nurse.
- Assesses, treats, and authorizes further medical care for staff member work-related injuries.
- Administers all ordered medications and/or health treatments.
- Responds to emergencies that may arise.
- Documents nursing care administered.
- Provides appropriate nursing care and support for students requiring 1:1 services.
- Monitors for communicable disease in the school for protection of students and school personnel.
- Reviews health status of students.
- Implements appropriate strategies and behavior supports directly related to health needs.
- Manages special health needs of students.
- Establishes and maintains professional communication with all stakeholders which is ongoing, timely, and respectful with consideration given to professional confidentiality.
- Assists building nurses with compliance of students and parents with immunization and communicable disease laws as well as annual screenings as mandated by the state and school district policies.
- Meets the state and district certification requirements.
- Fulfills routine requests made by supervisory and administrative staff promptly and cooperatively.
- Participates in professional development activities in order to maintain a professional standard of practice.
- Adheres to the ethical standards of the nursing profession.
- Communicates and works effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community to promote student wellness.
- Observes and follows all school district policies.
- Responds to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
- Maintains confidentiality with all student and personnel information and records.
- Implements and follows all District health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as directed by supervisor or other administrators as needed.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Registered Nurse required.
- Valid Kansas Registered Nurse License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
- Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after employment offer is made.)
Language Skills:
- Strong oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to articulate a clear and consistent message to multiple constituencies.
- Public speaking ability required.
- Multilingual skills preferred. As an organization/community that reflects and appreciates diversity, bilingual communication skills are noted and valued.
- Ability to read and interpret documents including the analysis of district assessment data.
- Ability to effectively write detailed reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate well, verbally and in writing, with parents, patrons, staff and students.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required and student management software preferred.
- Experience in using various computer software applications, specifically filtering data, and telecommunications equipment.
- Regular travel, locally as needed.
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and be able to provide own transportation to work sites.

- Must be able to lift 25 lbs. on occasion.
- Requires occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and turning.
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing and use of equipment including repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue.
