Job Description:

Perform a variety of routine biological and chemical test procedures on blood, urine and other body fluids and tissues, from clinical and research animals. Procedures are performed in the hematology, chemistry,

Urinalysis and cytology laboratories. Procedures are performed in a timely manner, including preparing specimens for analysis, maintaining appropriate accessioning records, recognizing conditions that may affect test results and reacting appropriately, and accurately recording and reporting test results in written and electronic format.

Performs preventive maintenance and quality control on laboratory equipment and analytical procedures at required intervals. Documents maintenance, QC, and repairs to equipment in the indicated by out-of-range quality control results, and verifies patient results that may have been affected.

Promotes understanding, cooperation, customer service and communication with other UFVH departments by answering questions concerning laboratory protocols and procedures from clinicians, students, and staff as well as referring veterinarians.

Assists in the training of OPS technical support. Assist veterinary students, residents, and faculty in clinical pathology.

Conserves laboratory resources by preparing reagents and using supplies and equipment as necessary and intended to perform job duties.

Performs administrative support job duties in the clinical pathology as assigned or as needed. Proactively triages and processes specimens appropriately for the test requested and in a timely manner; enters lab results and/or charges in the correct account or medical record promptly, sends test results to outside clients; prepares specimens for shipments to referral labs as needed.

Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of laboratories. Recognizes and takes action to correct unsafe conditions or hazards, and notifies staff or safety/security as needed

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Minimum Requirements:

BS in clinical laboratory sciences/medical technology and current medical technologist license and one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience working in a veterinary laboratory.
* Knowledge of basic principles of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation & endocrinology.
* Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
* Physical ability to produce quality blood smears for evaluation requested.
* Ability to explain laboratory protocol.
* Ability to determine appropriate laboratory test for the result requested.
* Ability to learn and practice appropriate safety procedures for dealing with potentially infectious agents, and hazardous chemicals.
* Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
* Experience and skill in performing manual cell counts, leukocyte differentials, and making dilutions of body fluids.

This is a CARE position offering limited benefits, including health insurance and paid time off. When appropriate certifications are achieved, promotional opportunities to a level II title may be available. This position will also become eligible for transition into a TEAMS (staff) salary plan.
