You will serve as a Fire Protection Engineer in the Planning, Design, and Construction Business Line. Duties * You will receive formal and/or on-the-job instructions designed to familiarize you with the functions/operations of the program area. * You will perform design analyses and calculations for fire protection projects. * You will prepare working drawings, comparative cost analysis, Request for Proposals (RFPs) and project specifications for a wide variety of facility types. * You will make site investigation field trips to project sites, as required, to collect pertinent data or define project scope by inspection of existing conditions. Requirements Conditions of Employment * Must be a US Citizen. * Must be determined suitable for federal employment. * Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. * New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. * This position is covered under the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA). Certification in the Acquisition Functional Area and category assigned to the position is required within established category timeframes. * You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases. * This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time. * You will be required to complete ethics orientation within three months of appointment and submit a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, OGE-450, within 30 days of appointment. Qualifications GS-09: In addition to the Basic Education Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Reviewing/Inspecting fire protection systems for a variety of facilities; 2) Applying codes, standards, regulations and policies such as Building and Fire codes; and 3) Performing engineering calculations, cost estimates, project documents, reports, and designs.

2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to do the work of the position.

A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience GS-07: In addition to the Basic Education Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Reviewing basic sprinkler system construction drawings; 2) Assisting with basic fire alarm system construction drawings; and 3) Assist with inspection and testing of various fire protection systems and construction assemblies.

1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement in a field that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to do the work of the position.

Physical Demands: Occasional physical activity is required including walking, climbing, or bending in the performance of field work, for designs and during field inspections of existing and/or new facilities during design and construction. Work Environment: A. Work is performed primarily in an office setting. Travel to CONUS and OCONUS activities for assigned projects is required. There are occasional factory visits, and exposures to conditions in buildings and facilities that are under construction. Travel under demanding conditions in support of military operations is also occasionally required. Percentage of travel is 10%. Education Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
