LIFEGUARD WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR

Job PostingThis is a highly skilled water safety work at City swimming pool facilities. This position copes with large groups, including children, monitoring both visually and audibly to insure safety, facility rules and health standards. Duties include enforcing rules and regulations governing use of facilities, preventing injury or loss of life, and administering first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation as necessary. Lifeguards are responsible for assisting with routine pool maintenance and custodial duties and other tasks as assigned by supervisors. Work schedules will vary. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and regulations concerning public use of swimming areas and established water safety practices. Supervision is received from the Aquatic Facility Manager who reviews work through personal observations for effective application of life guarding techniques. Work may occasionally be performed under adverse weather conditions.Essential Job FunctionsEnforces policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons. Assist in applying appropriate disciplinary action for violations. Reports all disciplinary problems to the Lead Lifeguard. Observes patrons and identifies potentially dangerous or hazardous situations to prevent accidents. Displays sound judgment and makes on the spot quick decisions to insure safety of all users of the pool areas. Reports potential physical hazards, unsafe conditions and complaints to the Lead Lifeguard. Rescues patrons in distress; administers First Aid or CPR as required. Prepares necessary paperwork, associated with Learn-to-Swim classes, to file with City and American Red Cross. Assists recreation staff in case of shortage of staff or in emergencies. Assists in maintaining water and deck areas; assists in cleaning restrooms, showers and locker rooms. Performs related work as required. Ability to detect potentially dangerous or hazardous situations at swimming pool facilities.Minimum QualificationsEducation & Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or GED. One (1) season of experience as a Pool Lifeguard. Must meet a vision standard of 20/20 corrected. Successful completion of the City's lifeguard skills test will be required prior to being appointed. Must possess certifications in CPR, First Aid, Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor. Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification is a plus.
