Job Description: Research Infusion Nurse

Minimum Qualifications:

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Virginia Registered Nursing License
  • Current BLS certification (ACLS preferred)
  • OCN certification preferred


Skills and Experience:

  • Proficiency in IV and venous access device management
  • Experience in chemotherapy/biotherapy administration


Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with standard oncology care practices


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Oncology Care Practices:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of age-specific differences in patient populations.
  • Assess and monitor patient therapy using appropriate technical skills under physician supervision.
  • Assist physicians with exams and procedures.
  • Maintain efficient and appropriate patient flow.
  • Understand reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
  • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central venous access devices.
  • Document all elements of care.
  • Communicate pertinent information and interventions to physicians or mid-level providers.
  • Serve as a resource for medical assistants and LPNs.
  • Triage patient/family phone calls and document relevant information.
  • Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching.
  • Be aware of community resources available to patients and assist with referrals if necessary.
  • Follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing through ongoing education.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Serve as a mentor/preceptor and provide day-to-day guidance to less experienced nurses.

Oncology Clinical Trial Practices:

  • Confirm informed consent is documented before performing any study-specific tasks.
  • Identify patients requiring increased nursing assessment and management, collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure patient safety.
  • Provide patient education regarding required study procedures.
  • Educate and evaluate patient adherence to and documentation of self-administered protocol agents, diaries, and return of such agents.
  • Collaborate with investigators to determine if treatment schedule or drug dose modifications are necessary and communicate findings to the study team and other care providers.
  • Ensure appropriate communication between research and clinical staff regarding patient-specific care needs, including telephone contact.
  • Ensure evidence-based symptom management as permitted by the protocol.
  • Administer investigational compounds and/or chemotherapy/biotherapy to patients according to the protocol and applicable regulations.
  • Perform study-required procedures such as routine lab collection, study-specific sample collection, vital signs, and ECGs according to the protocol-defined timeline.
  • Record all study procedures performed, including vital signs, ECGs, blood draws, infusions, and infusion reactions. This may include collecting and documenting current medication lists.
