DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS / FLEET MANAGEMENT DIVISION
LOCATION: 3505 DRIES LANE, PEORIA, ILLINOIS
HOURS: 3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. (Midnight)
Mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of motorized and related equipment. Performance of skilled tasks in motor and equipment repair work on automobiles, trucks, street cleaning, and construction equipment; making diagnoses and effecting replacements and repairs of mechanical, hydraulics, and electrical components.

HOWEVER, IF YOU CHOOSE TO WAIVE THAT REQUIREMENT, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN A TWENTY (20) MILE RADIUS OF CITY HALL AND GIVE UP 2% OF YOUR BASE PAY FOR FIVE (5) YEARS.
Examples of Duties
Diagnoses malfunctions of mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical nature; effects repairs.
Removes and replaces shock absorbers, transmissions, installs and adjusts clutches and cleans and adjusts carburetors; front end alignments of cars and vehicles.
Converts vehicles from gas to diesel engines.
Removes and replaces gas tanks, air governors and other units; and tests generators.
Tests and adjusts engines, .fuel injection systems, fuel and spray nozzles, fuel transfer or oil-supply pump and governor.
Inspects and repairs mechanical parts of motor sweepers, including bearings, shafts, conveyor belts, squeeges, drive chains and sprockets.
Fuels vehicles if required.
Tunes up motor using testing equipment.
Operates a wrecker-tow truck.
Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles.
Repairs and replaces front end components such as ball-joints, idler and pitman arms; and adjusts front end height.
Performs welding and other metal work.
Services and repairs small engines such as pumps, lawn mower engines and motorcycle engines.
Performs major repairs, adjustments and replacement of components on snow-control equipment such as plows and salt spreaders.
Applies City of Peoria identification logo‘s and numbers to vehicles.
Performs emergency road service.
Keeps standard records of work performed.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma/GED supplemented by successful completion of a recognized motor and equipment mechanic apprenticeship program; and experience as an equipment or automotive mechanic. Welding and small engine knowledge beneficial. Valid driver‘s license required. Must be able to obtain necessary hand tools required by a skilled motor and equipment mechanic. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities and skills of the position.
Supplemental Information
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the motor and equipment mechanic‘s grade.
Knowledge of the principles of operation of internal combustion engines.
Knowledge of motor and equipment parts, parts books, and parts identification, motor and equipment.
Ability to read and understand motor and equipment shop manuals.
Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to diagnose defects and repair general motor and equipment units, vehicles, components and apparatus.
Ability to operate a wrecker-tow truck.
Ability to operate equipment services sufficiently to test repairs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other City employees.
Skill in locating and adjusting malfunctions in motorized and related equipment.
Skill in the care and use of tools employed in all phases of equipment and motor repair and maintenance.
