Position Description

This position leads and oversees violence prevention projects and initiatives in order to create and maintain safe, healthy, and thriving communities. The position manages contracts and leads planning, implementation, and facilitation for designated violence prevention initiatives.


Work Location

This position currently works on-site only.

The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contract management, including development of contracts and contract budgets, negotiation of contracts with contractors, working with City partners (e.g. department admin staff, procurement) to ensure contract execution, ongoing contract monitoring (including site visits, performance monitoring, and budget monitoring), tracking spending and approving invoices, performance management, and other contract-related duties.
  2. Planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and continuous quality improvement/evaluation for violence preventative restorative and response initiatives.
  3. Supporting monitoring and grant reporting, including supporting progress reporting and financial reporting, for various grants.
  4. Researching best practices and innovative approaches to address violence-related health issues and making recommendations for new policies and initiatives.
  5. Assisting with identifying external funding opportunities and preparing proposals in response to external requests for proposals/grant opportunities to secure outside funding that will assist communities.
  6. Presenting at internal City meetings and community meetings on the public health approach to violence prevention and on violence intervention initiatives.
  7. Developing, maintaining, and growing relationships with community-based partners.
  8. Serving on variety of cross-jurisdictional committees and community groups, communicating about current Department initiatives, activities, and responses to violence-related health issues.
  9. Assisting with and facilitating meeting planning for several different efforts, including the violence prevention multijurisdictional team, the West Broadway Business Coalition, Community Mental Wellbeing workgroup, Racial Equity Community of Practice, and MVPCC Alumni Network.
  10. Supporting the city‘s emergency preparedness responses.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Office environment and field work in community and schools.


Required Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor‘s degree or equivalent in Public Health, Human Services, Social Services, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Youth Studies, Youth Development, Sociology, Community Health, or a related field.

Minimum Experience
Requires two years of related experience.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Union Representation

Eligible List Statement

The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire two months after it has been established.

Interview Selection

The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate‘s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

  2. Knowledge of violence prevention best practices.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of the public health approach to violence prevention.
  4. Ability to present information and ideas accurately, effectively, and concisely, with excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience in public speaking.
  5. Ability to work in collaborative environment and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations with multiple levels of needs and abilities.
  6. Working knowledge of modern office software.
  7. Ability to multitask.
  8. Ability to work independently.
  9. Ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional and diverse teams and to maintain effective working relationships with diverse and special needs populations.
  10. Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
