Achievement Centers for Children is a Cleveland, Ohio based non-profit organization providing support, services and programs that help children with a wide range of physical, emotional, neurological, or developmental disabilities achieve their full potential. Comprehensive services to children with disabilities and their families are provided through education and autism services, therapy, family support, recreation, sports and therapeutic horsemanship, and adult services. Charitable donations help to provide many of these critical services for families, regardless of their ability to pay.

Organization History: In 1940, three Cleveland Rotarians, George Gund, Tris Speaker and Frederick McGuire opened the doors of the Achievement Centers for Children, then known as the Society for Crippled Children. They had a vision and hope that every child would have an opportunity to reach his or her full potential. Many of the specific disabilities have changed through the years, but the dedication of the Achievement Centers to children with disabilities and their families has remained constant. The words of the Achievement Centers’ mission have changed, but the spirit has remained the same: “to empower children and adults with disabilities to achieve their greatest potential through holistic and family- focused services.


SUMMARY

The Chief Financial Officer for Achievement Centers for Children is a highly visible and significant leadership role in Northeast Ohio and in the communities surrounding Cleveland. Reporting to the President & CEO, this $12M organization of 141 FTE employees across three locations provides a comprehensive range of programs and services. The Agency’s future vision and direction is to build upon its solid reputation and increase its visibility as a strong and impactful community partner.


With a strong leadership team in place, a highly committed and engaged Board of Directors, and the organization ripe for transformational growth, this is an exciting and pivotal time to join The Achievement Centers for Children. The successful candidate will be a strategic, financially focused partner to the CEO and an advisor to the Board of Directors.


The ACC offers the unique opportunity for a hybrid work environment, allowing employees to split their time working from home and one of their three locations.


The CFO directs and oversees financial, budgetary, accounting functions, revenue cycle management and for profit therapy business enterprise and supervises these functional area executive staff leaders, setting and assuring implementation of goals. Additionally, this person directs and administers activities of the organization in support of policies, goals and objectives set by the President & CEO and Board of Directors.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly leads team of two; the Controller, VP Therapy Business Enterprise business line (NCTA).
  • Responsible for all accounting functions, including statement and budget preparation and monitoring day-to-day financial procedures including cash flow results that matter.
  • Responsible to lead the execution and maintenance of a new financial software package.
  • Ongoing governance of all financial systems.
  • Works closely with C-Suite Team, Executive Leadership Team and management to launch and create an annual operational and capital budget and presenting to the President & CEO and the Board Finance Committee/Board Executive Committee for final approval.
  • Reviews the budgets against actual figures during the year, on a monthly or quarterly basis with managers and supervisors; reports to the President & CEO regarding financial results for each program/department. Works with Vice Presidents/Directors/Managers to problem solve challenges.
  • Supervises the annual audit and revenue cycle management in conjunction with the Controller.
  • Oversight and management of expense to revenue ratio.
  • Plans and directs new operational procedures to obtain optimum efficiency and reduced costs, while working closely with the President & CEO, and other Team members.
  • Evaluates the results of overall operations regularly and systematically and reports results to the President & CEO with recommendations for improvement.
  • The CFO oversees the staff leadership of our for-profit therapy programs and related services; evaluates the financial effectiveness of our for-profit therapy programs to provide ongoing feedback for continuous quality improvement; monitor progress toward meeting or exceeding financial goals.
  • Conducts annual evaluations of staff. Works with staff to write and implement plans for professional growth consistent with the areas for growth specified in the annual evaluation and with the organization’s goals.
  • Attends all board meetings, executive committee meetings, and staffs the board finance committee and board endowment committee assuring their involvement and understanding of budgets, financial reports, endowment report and audit reports. Assures the Finance Committee’s review and evaluation of the endowment advisors' performance during the past year.
  • Reviews and authorizes for execution contracts to ensure compliance. Enlists legal insight when necessary.
  • Ensures in conjunction with the CEO/President and other C-suite members that all organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Promotes a positive image by representing the Achievement Centers for Children in a courteous, professional manner. Fosters and maintains good public relations with all community sources.
  • Promotes a team approach within each program and throughout Achievement Centers for Children.
  • Works in family-centered partnerships with the individuals and families served by Achievement Centers for Children.
  • Conducts self with professional dignity; understands the importance of good human relations; able to motivate others; and possess initiative and judgment.


QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting or Finance; CPA and/or MBA a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in financial management with prior experience as a CFO or the lead finance person within a non-profit organization is preferred.
  • Ability to provide competent leadership for the agency through foresight, planning, organization and follow through utilizing strong strategic thinking and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficient in the use of accounting software (e.g., financial, spreadsheet, statistical and database programs, etc.)
  • Demonstrable background in managing large, organization-wide projects at similar sized organizations.


KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Possesses high integrity and is passionate about the mission of ACC.
  • Effective budget analysis, cash flow, revenue cycle management and time management skills.
  • Experience working in an accounting environment without yet best in class systems and requiring a certain amount of manual processes.
  • Experience working with EMR systems and understanding health care billing and revenue cycle management is highly desired.
  • Strong experience with mid-market ERP/Financial
  • Excellent presentation, communication and organizational skills and capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate and explain complex technical information to non-financial professionals.
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills demonstrated by the ability to understand, analyze and interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
