Veterinary Assistant

Princevalle Pet Hospital is a private general practice that has been in the heart of Gilroy for almost 20 years. We see dogs and cats and are open on Mon-Friday from 8:30am-5:30pm.

Job Description:

In search of an experienced veterinary assistant to join our team. A veterinary assistant plays a crucial role in supporting our veterinarians and ensuring the smooth operation of our veterinary clinic.

Responsibilities:

1. Animal Care:

• Assist with handling and restraining animals during examinations, treatments, and procedures.
• Monitor animals’ vital signs and report any abnormalities to the veterinarian.
• Administer medications, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian or RVT under DVM supervision.
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in animal enclosures and treatment areas.

1. Client Interaction:

• Greet clients and their pets, ensuring a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
• Educate clients on basic pet care, preventive measures, and treatment options.
• Provide compassionate support to pet owners during difficult situations.

1. Laboratory and Clinic Tasks:

• Prepare and label samples for diagnostic tests (bloodwork, urinalysis, etc.).
• Assist with X-rays, cardiac ultrasounds, and other imaging procedures.
• Sterilize equipment and maintain a clean and organized clinic environment.
• Restock supplies and manage inventory.

1. Animal Handling and Restraint:

• Safely handle animals during procedures, ensuring their comfort and safety.
• Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring.
• Help with surgical preparation and post-operative care.

1. Record Keeping:

• Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient history, treatments, and procedures.
• Input data into electronic health records (Cornerstone)

1. Team Collaboration:

• Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other staff members.
• Follow protocols and guidelines established by the clinic.

Qualifications:

• At least 1 year of veterinary experience within the last 5 years.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Passion for animals and a desire to contribute to their well-being.
• Excellent communication skills and a friendly demeanor.
• Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfortable handling animals of various sizes and temperaments.
• Basic computer skills for record keeping.
• Experience with Cornerstone and Idexx in-house lab equipment is a plus

Working Conditions:

• The job may involve standing for extended periods, lifting animals, and exposure to animal hair, dander, and odors.
• Some OT may be necessary in come cases.
