Northern Tool + Equipment is seeking a talented Ecommerce UX Designer who will contribute to digital products and experiences that will form the future of the Northern Tool brand. Key objectives are to distill business requirements and complex user-centered interactive scenarios for desktop, tablet, and mobile web applications into easy-to-understand design deliverables while seamlessly integrating brand, appearance, usability, and functionality. This individual will bring empathy, creativity, and strategic skills in service of solving complex business challenges and customer needs.

As a member of the eCommerce Product Team, in this role, you will work closely with other UX designers, operations specialists, software developers, QA professionals, researchers, marketing, and product management to deliver outstanding customer experiences.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Create deliverables such as detailed wireframes, user flows, mockups, prototypes, and pixel-perfect designs with relevant specifications to effectively communicate design requirements.
  2. Collaborates with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to gather and finalize design requirements.
  3. Support customer research and feedback review, competitive analysis, and usability testing.
  4. Drives frequent iteration and evolution of design solutions for current and proposed experiences.
  5. Plans and executes quantitative and qualitative testing methods across all stages of design.
  6. Works with internal teams through development and QA life cycles to ensure final development meets design expectations and business requirements.
  7. Works closely with the analytics team to understand consumer needs and behaviors, both prior to efforts and when evaluating usability of proposed solutions.
  8. Participates with other creative personnel in the ongoing creation of user-interface (UI) elements, style guidelines and visual design standards that support our brands.
  9. Keeps abreast of developments in web interface design, including competitive research and analysis, incorporating findings and new ideas into work that benefits our business and end-users.
  10. Participates in the selection of technology partners and solution providers to fill any gaps in support of our user-experience (UX) goals and initiatives.
  11. Develops processes that improve the efficiencies of the Team. Acts as a conduit for communicating information across departments that may impact the business and our customers. Fosters an environment of multidisciplinary collaboration and creative problem-solving.


What you will bring to the table:

  • Bachelor’s degree or minimum of 2-year post high school degree in web design, interactive design, UX design or related field.
  • 3+ years of UX design experience.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of User-Centered Design (UCD) principles with a strong portfolio of notable quality.
  • Proven ability to understand/interpret front-end web markup and scripting including HTML, CSS, and jQuery.
  • Recognizes the value of connecting the brand and user experience with technology.
  • Well-versed in designing complex interactive functionality for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices/screens.
  • Experience using project workflow/issue tracking applications such as Azure DevOps, Jira or comparable.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite and prototyping tools such as Photoshop, Axure or comparable.
  • Ability to observe, listen and identify and glean insights that lead to action.
  • Understands usability best practices, personas, taxonomy, terminology, and content strategy.
  • Understands front-end performance including page load times and browser differentiators.
  • Prior experience working within an Ecommerce framework.
  • Prior experience working within HCL (IBM WebSphere) Commerce a plus.
  • Passionate about creating a world-class consumer-facing user experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of Company personnel.
  • Adeptly handle changing priorities and multi-tasking throughout a project release.
