Telecommunicator Shift Supervisor

Emergency Services SupervisorOpportunity to serve in Emergency Services as a supervisor over an assigned shift consisting of four to six telecommunicators while operating an enhanced 911 emergency system in receiving and dispatching emergency calls. An employee in this class is responsible for serving as a supervisor in the operation of an enhanced 911 emergency system involving a network of complex equipment. Positions are involved in receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls. Duties include dispatching appropriate fire and EMS personnel and equipment, providing pre-arrival instructions to callers. Good judgement is required in making decisions, this person must also respond calmly and effectively during emergency situations. A person working at this capacity completes daily shift reports for review by the Communications Training Officer or E911 Systems Manager.The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Considerable knowledge of rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Ability to direct the daily activities of an assigned shift. Ability to make quick decisions in handling emergency situations. Ability to hear and speak clearly and remain calm during emergency situations. Ability to communicate effectively emergency medical dispatch protocols. Considerable knowledge of the locations and capabilities of available fire, rescue, and emergency medical units. Ability to follow standard operating procedures. Considerable knowledge of the operation of a wide variety of complex communications equipment and ability to use all equipment. Lifting up to 20 lbs. occasionally 10 lbs frequently or negligible amounts constantly, requires walking or standing to a significant degree.High school graduation and at least two years experience as a Telecommunicator required. CPR, APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator, EMD certification required. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.Oversees all aspects of assigned shift involving four to six telecommunicators in performing duties typical of a communication center. Provides on-going feedback to the CTO or E911 Systems Manager on daily operations, employees performance, completes annual performance evaluations for each employee assigned to the shift. Categorizes medical calls and provides prearrival instructions for medical and fire emergencies based on flip cards published by APCO. Dispatches ALS vehicles and emergency medical service personnel to respond to medical emergencies; assigns calls to volunteer rescue squads and medic cars as necessary. Dispatches county fire personnel and equipment in addition to appropriate volunteer fire departments; determines appropriate volunteer fire department and amount of response based on computer information and standard operating procedures; monitors frequency for any additional assistance. Answers calls requesting emergency assistance; asks callers appropriate questions in determining proper response needed; verifies and obtains all needed information in order to correctly dispatch the call. Provides on-going feedback to communication supervisor on employee's performance; provides a checklist on performance information. Provides oversite for training of newly hired employees in all areas of the daily operations of an enhanced 911 center. Works in conjunction with CTO in developing and teaching continuing education for the division. Responds promptly to all mutual aid requests from adjoining counties; monitors calls from a large number of state and local units transmitting messages; patches in out of county ambulances to local hospitals. Provides appropriate information to law enforcement agencies, regarding 911 calls received when there is not any voice contact made with the caller. Keeps all systems in a constant state of readiness through preventative maintenance and cleaning. Completes all associated paperwork accurately. Performs related duties as assigned.
