Police OfficerThe Front Royal Police Department is seeking dedicated and committed Virginia DCJS certified officers. The department has 12-hour permanent shifts resulting in working an average of 13 days per month. The minimum pay for certified officers is $57,000 annually, negotiable dependent upon experience, qualifications and certifications. The department is a full-service department. Benefits include Virginia State Retirement with the Hazardous Duty (LEOS) supplement, Deferred Compensation options, health, wellness and supplemental insurances, substantial paid time off, shift differential pay, and tuition assistance benefits.Police Officers play a vital role in maintaining public safety and enforcing the law within the community. This position is committed to upholding justice, protecting citizens, and providing assistance during emergencies. Police Officers identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Candidates must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, and a physical and drug screening prior to appointment.The Town of Front Royal prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetics, political affiliation, or military status in the recruitment, selection, and hiring of its workforce.On an assigned shift, operate a patrol vehicle to observe violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.Respond promptly to emergency calls and incidents.Conduct thorough investigations of crimes, accidents, and other incidents.Engage with community members to foster positive relationships and promote public safety.Enforce laws related to traffic, criminal activity, and local ordinances.Utilize surveillance techniques to monitor suspicious activities.Provide assistance in conflict management situations to ensure peaceful resolutions.Enforce traffic laws; issue citations for traffic violations.Serve warrants and make arrests; maintain warrant records.Testify in court.Provide police escorts and direct traffic.Perform residential and commercial checks.Fill out arrest records, fingerprints, and photograph suspects.Perform prisoner security functions.Report unsafe conditions existing in street or other public facilities.Interview victims and witnesses.Perform property and evidence duties.Prepare detailed reports documenting incidents, observations, and actions taken.Participate in a variety of in-service training programs.May be assigned collateral duties such as investigations, radar patrol, DUI patrol, community policing, or training, as qualified.May be assigned special duties such as school program presentations, evidence transport, etc.Perform related tasks as required.Requirements:Education: High School Diploma/GEDExperience: Virginia DCJS Certified Law Enforcement OfficerValid Drivers LicenseKnowledge:Fundamental principles of police techniquesFederal, state, and local lawsPolice investigative techniquesGeography of the town and location of important buildingsSkills:Communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writingPrioritize and complete tasks in a timely mannerBe organized and capable of multi-taskingUse of firearmsAbilities:Deal with both juveniles and adultsAnalyze evidence collected at various scenesQuestion suspects with tact and respectEstablish working relationships with other employeesWork Environment:The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.The officer may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.This role requires a proactive approach to public service, strong communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure. Candidates must be prepared for the physical demands of the job and possess a commitment to ethical conduct in all interactions.Physical Demands:Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet police and safety standards, to include: see well enough to drive vehicles under emergency conditions, make valid identifications, use firearms, detect hazardous situations, write legible reports; hear and speak well enough to converse on the radio, telephone and in person over incident noise, and be alert to situations of danger; bodily mobility to make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods, stamina and endurance necessary in the apprehension of combative suspects, use of hands and fingers to write and type reports, utilize safety gear, and drive vehicles under emergency conditions; ability to distinguish hazardous odors; ability to lift equipment as necessary.This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
