Position summary:


The primary function of this role is to provide environmental waste and water, support, monitoring and guidance. This position coordinates daily environmental activities among functional groups. This role also has responsibility for maintaining policies and procedures to ensure the application of federal, state, and local environmental regulations for programs related primarily to water and waste aspects. Additionally, the Environmental Specialist position interacts with and supports Environmental group in overall compliance activities


Responsibilities:

  • Manage and facilitate waste, wastewater, and stormwater programs at the assigned business manufacturing units in a manner that ensures compliance with the government regulations, permits, and corporate directives for these programs.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain systems and procedures to ensure regulatory environmental compliance with activities such as waste management, water permitting compliance, analytical data collection and interpretation, and SPCC plan management.
  • Monitor environmental performance for business manufacturing units.
  • Report on performance for internal metrics and reports.
  • Participate in business manufacturing unit operations and maintenance meetings, acting as an SME as needed.
  • Identify and implement projects to improve environmental performance.
  • Prepare and submit routine external periodic compliance reports in a timely manner including Harris County & Galveston Subsidence District (HGSD) report, Texas Water Development Board report, Deepwell reports, Annual Waste Summary report, Annual Pollution Prevention Progress Report, Mechanical Integrity Testing Report, Annual Tier II report, and Annual Toxic Release Inventory report.
  • Spill/Release support including agency notifications to appropriate regulators, providing technical assistance with cleanup to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Interact with external regulatory agencies and lead agency inspections.
  • Provide environmental and technical expertise for business unit operations, process change evaluation, and implementation.
  • Build relationships and establish open environmental culture at manufacturing sites that promotes and enhances environmental performance improvements and compliance at the assigned business manufacturing units.
  • Ensure that the activities are carried out to comply with the integrated management system, as applicable (GMP, health, environmental, safety, quality and responsible care requirements). Lead and participate in corporate compliance management system audits.
  • Periodically conduct and document third party waste disposal company audits to determine acceptable use by the Company, per company protocols.
  • Participate in manufacturing unit incident investigations and projects and assist with corrective action plan development and implementation.
  • Present training topics to operating and manufacturing unit personnel and resident contractors.
  • Work with corporate environmental group and promote corporate goals and initiatives.
  • Mentor other environmental professionals.
  • Support plant turnarounds.
  • Periodic on-call duty rotation and travel between KAI Houston manufacturing units.
  • Coordinate and assist one on-site waste technician.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in a STEM-related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of technical environmental experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of waste and water regulations knowledge
  • Ability to multi-task; good organizational skills.
  • Customer service focus: ability to influence; ability to communicate diplomatically.
  • Strong Excel, Word, and database skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, presentation, interpersonal, creative thinking, consulting, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work to manage multiple projects to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving/decision-making skills.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Candidates must have a valid driver's license.
