Photonics Architect

Ayo Electronics is a venture-backed early-stage startup developing processors specialized for machine learning. The processor will provide orders or magnitude improvement in speed and power efficiency with a goal of unseating the GPU as the dominant computing platform for AI.
We are seeking an integrated photonics engineer to serve as a core team member who is one of the first employees of the company. The photonics engineer will design active and passive integrated photonic circuits that serve as the basis of our product. The ideal candidate has taped out before, has a get-it-done attitude, and has both a commanding knowledge of integrated photonics and a deep desire to learn more. As one of the earliest employees of the company, this will be a multi-disciplinary role that requires tight collaboration with the machine learning application team. As the company grows, you will also have the opportunity to build out the integrated photonics team, becoming a company leader.
Responsibilities:
- Simulate, design, layout, and test integrated photonic structures
- Define tape-out strategies and photonic integrated circuit architecture for each tape-out
- Collaborate with AI/ML engineers to develop an accurate simulation environment of the processor
Qualifications:
- PhD or MS with 5+ years experience
- Excited about working in a fast-paced startup
- Experience designing, simulating, taping out, measuring, and testing photonic integrated circuits
- Experience designing passive and active integrated photonic structures
- Experience performing photonic simulation using tools such as Lumerical, Tidy3D, Photon Design, RSoft, VPI, or similar.
- Experience probing, measuring and testing photonic integrated circuits
- Collaborative, get-it-done attitude
- Excellent communicator
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with advanced packaging of photonic integrated circuits such as hybrid or flip-chip integration
- Experience designing multi-quantum well structures for lasers, LEDs, or semiconductor optical amplifiers
- Experience designing waveguide-coupled photodiodes
- Experience co-designing and co-packaging photonic integrated circuits with electronic integrated circuits
