Clinical Nurse Lead

Registered Professional Nurse who possesses clinical and leadership skills relative to the needs of the Patient Care Unit. Oversees the RNs and ancillary staff in the performance of their duties.
Ambulatory Surgery Center in Dedham, MA., with eight operating rooms and two procedure rooms. Focusing on outpatient orthopedic surgical subspecialties, including total joint replacement, sports medicine, hand, wrist, elbow, and foot surgeries.
1. Management Resource Systems Coordination
- Ensure that patients are assigned based on competency.
- Reviews staffing levels for the day to accommodate the OR schedule.
- Manages code responses and ambulatory transfers into hospital.
- Responsible and accountable for assisting with the smooth running of the OR schedule.
- Acts in collaboration with the nurse manager and the staff to consult, advise and work toward accomplishing the resolution of problems.
- Adheres to budget as outlined by the appropriate personnel.
2. Leadership
- Collaborates with the OR staff, surgeons, anesthesia care providers, ancillary staff, facilities personnel and outside equipment suppliers in order to facilitate patient movement within the OR suite.
- Manages the overall flow of patients in the Operating Room
- Proactive style and accountable to ensure resolution of issues.
- Maintains open and effective communication, resolves issues effectively and promotes a positive work environment.
- Engages and leads in council, committee and task force work that enhances patient care, outcomes, and satisfaction.
- Serves as a role model to promote excellence and safety, mentors and models leadership behavior in the professional practice setting.
3. Staff Development
- Supports staff professional development with activities that include planned and real time educational offerings/support to advance clinical practice, certification, life support/emergency preparedness, JC requirements, product rollouts, mentoring, etc.
- Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.
- Conducts needs assessments using a variety of strategic tools.
- Design, plan, prepare and present materials for use in educational programs for nursing staff inclusive of competency-based learning modules.
- Accessible to clinicians, and puts education plans in place for staff, monitors completion of staff competencies and education programs.
- Ensures staff demonstrates sound critical thinking skills in ongoing practice.
- Provides educational opportunities that benefit nurses at all stages of their career development.
- Supports integration of evidence based best practices and research into practice, contributes to nursing research and incorporates research findings into program planning.
- Work collaboratively with education team, managers, interdisciplinary team to support initiatives, central and unit orientation activities and is flexible in meeting needs of other departments.
4. Clinical Practice
- Serves as clinical expert in varying surgical procedures.
- Responds to changes in nursing practice and develops programs to support those changes.
5. Quality Improvement
- Collaborates with Quality and Patient Safety team to advance regulatory readiness, quality and patient safety initiatives.
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in the development and implementation of patient care policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines and standards of care.
- Facilitates quality improvement projects.
- Aids in the development, review and monitoring of policies, procedures, guidelines and/or standards.
- Works collaboratively with CSPD Department to ensure quality metrics (e.g. IUSS rate)
6. Informatics
- Utilizes information systems for enhancement of patient care.
- Utilizes information systems for monitoring staffing and budget in collaboration with nurse manager.
- Utilizes learning management system to plan, create, and track completion of education programs.
7. Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Has the responsibility to lead and support managers and directors in developing and improving operations to create optimal performance levels.
