DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The intern will collaborate with park personnel on a variety of projects aimed at enhancing their understanding of Park Operations, Resource Management, Administration, and Environmental Education. Under the guidance of a supervisor, the intern will receive comprehensive training on park protocols, safety measures, and the expectations associated with their role, as well as an overview of the Bureau of State Parks‘ mission.

The intern will play a key role in the planning, execution, and evaluation of specialized educational, interpretive, and recreational programs that involve collaboration with other staff members and volunteers. They will be assigned specific projects with defined objectives and deadlines, necessitating a significant level of independent initiative to effectively plan, research, gather data, collaborate, coordinate, implement, and report on the outcomes of these projects.

The intern will also be tasked with conducting certain programming independently, with preparatory support from an educator. Additionally, they will gather GPS data points related to various park features and upload this information to the GIS Park Portal.

In their role, the intern will assist the Environmental Education Specialist in the preparation, facilitation, and presentation of educational and interpretive programs for the public. They will become acquainted with the history of the park and engage in interpretation while staffing the historic Blacksmith shop. Administrative responsibilities will include filing, data entry, drafting documents, answering phone calls, operating office equipment, and providing assistance to visitors and callers. The intern will also support campground office operations to gain insights into processes that help address visitor inquiries and manage camper check-ins.

Furthermore, the intern will gain practical experience in maintaining park facilities, which may involve grounds keeping, trail servicing, and the removal of invasive plant species. They will have the opportunity to use various tools and equipment essential for the upkeep of recreational facilities. Throughout their internship, they will maintain weekly logs of their activities.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship that will run from 5/1/2025 through 8/29/2025
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position may require evenings and weekends, not to exceed 37.5 hours a week.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

  • Current full-time enrollment in a two-year degree, bachelor‘s degree or advanced degree program in one of the following majors:
    • Environmental Science
    • Environmental Education
    • Recreation Park and Tourism Management
    • Wildlife Biology
An approved major course which includes a qualifying 24 credit hours of study in the physical, biological and environmental sciences may be acceptable.Freshman year completedGood academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher)Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university

  • You must possess a valid driver‘s license which is not under suspension
