Boston, United States New England Aquarium Full time

We are looking for an experienced research scientist to join our team at the New England Aquarium as the Chair of our EcoMap program. In this role, you will lead a program that studies the impact of climate change and ocean use on marine species. Existing research and staff expertise in this program primarily focus on aerial survey design and execution, species distribution modeling, and risk assessment to inform the management and conservation of marine mammals. We are seeking someone who can contribute their own research to support our conservation goals related to climate change and responsible ocean use. While a background in the effects of climate change on highly migratory megafauna is preferred, we welcome applicants with expertise in a broad range of ecological and oceanographic disciplines. This position provides opportunities for growth in programmatic focal areas, including new field work opportunities, data collection methodologies, scientific inquiries, and taxa.

This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. While nine months of annual salary support will be provided, you are expected to lead fundraising efforts for the program and your residual salary, as well as contribute to broader organizational efforts. The typical schedule will be Monday - Friday from 9a - 5p EST. It is expected that the person filling this position will primarily work remotely; a computer will be provided, but the employee will need an adequate workspace and high-speed internet connection. Remote days are only available for residents of MA, NY, RI, VT, NH, or ME.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Lead the evolution of the scientific and strategic direction of the EcoMap program, aligning it with broader organizational strategies, priorities, and targeted outcomes.
  2. Conduct primary scientific research related to your areas of expertise.
  3. Identify conservation issues and research opportunities where innovative monitoring and analysis approaches can enhance the effectiveness and impact of our conservation science projects and initiatives.
  4. Serve as a leader and key spokesperson internally and externally for the program's research and as an ambassador for the whole organization.
  5. Contribute to fundraising efforts for staff salaries, research projects, and the organization.
  6. Recruit, supervise, mentor, and advise staff, including existing staff with expertise in quantitative marine mammal ecology and aerial surveys.
  7. Supervise financial and reporting/funding requirements for contracts and grants.
  8. Other duties as applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Training and Experience

  • PhD. or equivalent experience required. Post-doctoral training or additional advanced degrees are also desirable.
  • Highly accomplished scientific researcher with a marine conservation orientation and a recognized authority in their field.
  • 10+ years of relevant research experience (can include Ph.D. research), with at least five years leading a lab or program.
  • Strong record of scholarship in field(s) of expertise.
  • Demonstrated external thought leadership in field of study, including presenting research at scientific conferences and serving as an invited expert on regional, national, and international working groups.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Evidence that research outputs have contributed to environmental management/policy measures, processes, and/or regulations.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills to disseminate research findings, write successful research grants, and serve as an effective ambassador for the organization.
  • Ability to raise significant levels of government and/or private funding to support a large-scale lab/program.
  • Broad professional network with strong existing partnerships in the chosen field of expertise.
  • Must be dedicated to fostering collaboration and enhancing the overall effectiveness, reputation, and impact of the organization.
  • Willingness to travel to national and international professional conferences and workshops to represent the program and the organization.
