Highway Maintenance WorkerIn conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates medium equipment such as skid steer loaders, tandem dump trucks, large rollers (>4 tons), tractors with large mowers (>10' wide), and combination tractors with side-mounted mowers. Performs a variety of tasks for the Work Request Crew related to maintenance operations, including, but not limited to, cutting and limbing rights-of-way on highways and around bridges, patching roadway surfaces, installing and paving driveways, cleaning and repairing ditches and storm drainage systems, repairing sinkholes and washouts, repairing and clipping shoulders and slopes, repairing dirt roads, installing, replacing, or resetting signs, replacing and repairing guardrail, repairing bridge deficiencies, removing log jams, removing litter, debris, and dead animals, installing and maintaining traffic controls, etc. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Minimum business plan requirements include logging and completing work requests within 30 days. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in flagging traffic in work zones during roadway repair and work request operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Flags traffic using sign board and/or hand-held flags. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws, tamps, pavement breakers, pole saws, and weed eaters as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations as needed. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present to get maximum utilization of equipment. Conducts pre-trip and safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in tracking and reporting daily work performed to supervisors, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists in emergency, on-call, or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
