About the Opportunity
The Department of Neuro-Oncology is actively hiring for this faculty position, which is responsible for providing clinical expertise in neurophysiology, general neurology for patients with brain tumors and patients suffering from neurological effects of cancer of the central nervous system. - Provides expertise in neurology and clinical neurophysiology.
- Has expertise in conducting neurophysiological testing and interpretation for EMG/NCS.
- Ability to perform EMG/NCSs to diagnose neuropathies, plexopathy, neuromuscular junction disorders and myopathies.
- Able to provide neurology consultations for patients with neurological disorders including neurological complications of cancer and treatment related neurotoxicities.
- Willing to participate in the teaching of the neuro oncology fellows, neurology residents and medical students in the specialty of neurology/neuro oncology.
- Willing to participate in academic activities including clinical research related to the neurological complications of cancer.
GENERAL DUTIES:
Clinical responsibilities:
- Clinical neurophysiology care for inpatient and outpatient, to include EMG and NCS.
- Inpatient consultation services for neurological disorders for cancer patients.
- Outpatient consultation services for neurological disorders for cancer patients.
- Experience with Botox injections for appropriate indications desirable but not required.
Administration:
- Participate in supervision of neurophysiology technicians.
- Serve on appropriate department and cancer neurology section administrative roles as assigned.
Research:
- Support and drive clinical research efforts of the department through the development and collaborations which facilitate the conduct of clinical research related to the neurological complications of cancer.
- Maintain a steady publication record through individual or collaborative projects.
Educational:
- Participates in the teaching of the neuro oncology fellows, neurology residents and medical students in the specialty of neurology/neurophysiology/neuro oncology.
Educational Requirements:
Fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology with training in EMG/NCS is required. Additional training in EEG/epilepsy is desirable but not required. Candidate should have board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in Clinical Neurophysiology.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
I. Develop and maintain a neurology/neurophysiology practice for patients referred to the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Provide physician staffing for the outpatient clinic and the inpatient service at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other clinical neurologists/neurophysiologists with the same level of training and experience. Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within 2 working days. Complete patient documentation for medical records with time frames provided by the institution. Will require dictating (when appropriate) in a clear and concise manner and visual review of documents. Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with referring physicians regarding patient care and treatment. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from the conference. Require appropriate consultations for neurology/neurophysiology patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.
II. Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the department. Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the department. Require that the person have the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation. Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or use of a computer and keyboard. Also will require guiding budget development and analysis.
III. Provide a balanced and integrated educational experience in neurology for residents, medical students and neuro oncology fellows, and the management of cancer in the central nervous system for those who rotate through the clinical consultative/neurology service. After comprehensive review and analysis, develop, implement, provide and evaluate the written learning materials for the specific graduate curriculum in neuro oncology. Develop and implement specific continuing education programs pertaining to neuro oncology. Attend and participate in department/division teaching and continuing education conferences, which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the hospital and campus.
IV. Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to meeting sites. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.
V. Represent the Department of Neuro Oncology in local, regional, state and national matters pertaining to the field of neuro oncology and effects of cancer on the central nervous system. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with department colleagues verbally or in writing.
VI. Practice in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.
VII. Strive to be a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, students, APN's & PA’s rotating on the service.
VIII. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.
IX. Must be able to work well within a context of interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.
