The Department of Neurosurgery at Tufts Medical Center is seeking an outstanding Neurosurgeon to join our neurosurgery department and continue to expand a community spine-focused practice at Melrose Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, MA. The applicant will join a department of 9 neurosurgeons, 10 physician assistants, 6 nurse practitioners, 11 neurosurgical residents, and an established support team. Our neurosurgery team provides hope and healing to patients living with nervous system conditions through the development and implementation of comprehensive neurosurgical treatment plans tailored to our patients' goals, comfort and well-being. How You’ll Transform Patient Care: You’ll become part of a growing and comprehensive neurosurgical department that provides the highest level of neurosurgical care You’ll participate in an attractive call schedule shared among the entire department at Tufts Medical Center and MelroseWakefiel Hospital allowing you to maintain all of your neurosurgical skills You’ll have the capability to use the latest cranial and spinal surgical techniques and have access to both cranial and spinal navigation as well as robotics at Tufts Medical Center. MelroseWakefield Hospital is in the process of evaluating budgeting, and obtaining spinal navigation as well as robotics. You’ll develop longitudinal relationships with your patients You’ll be a valuable member of the care team alongside physician colleagues, physician assistants, nurses, medical and administrative assistants, surgical technologists and anesthesiologists You’ll grow as a physician as you learn from new colleagues You’ll provide service and people-focused support to your patients You’ll join and contribute to a work environment that is flexible and in-tune with the desires of a modern workforce that values work/life balance You’ll work cross-functionally with various members of our community and stakeholders You’ll embrace one of our most fundamental values of active engagement within our communities, bringing the strength of academic and community care You’ll join an organization built on collaborative practices and community Practice Highlights The neurosurgery program at MelroseWakefield hospital, a part of Tufts Medicine, is a comprehensive program that evaluates and treats patients with cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve disorders. The administration is very supportive and dedicated to the growth of neurosurgery. The new hire will be charged with continuing growth in an already expanding spine-focused practice at MelroseWakefield Hospital. The candidate will spend 80-90% of their time at MelroseWakefield Hospital, providing inpatient, outpatient, and operative room care to the patients of the local community. Most procedures performed at MelroseWakefield Hospital are elective spinal procedures. The candidate would have the ability to bring cranial and more complex spine cases to Tufts Medical Center. Currently there are no neurosurgical resident physicians at the MelroseWakefield site although many other residencies, including general surgery, rotate through this hospital. Inpatient, outpatient, and operative assistance is provided by 2 dedicated neurosurgical physician assistants. The inpatient service involves intensive care and floor level patients in addition to emergency room and off-service consultations, including a Level 3 trauma center. This candidate will also participate in the shared call pool at Tufts Medical Center, an academic level 1 trauma center, to both foster intradepartmental relationship building as well as maintain cranial skill sets. MelroseWakefield has dedicated neurosurgical scrub techs, circulating nurses, C-arms, Jackson Tables, Wilson Frames, Mayfields, and Leica Surgical Microscopes. Spinal Navigation and Robotics are currently being budgeted for. Involvement in academic pursuits such as teaching of medical students/residents, attending academic conferences, and/or research can be supported although are not a requirement of this position. Anticipated first year volume of approximately 125 cases and 250 once established. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Board certification or eligibility in Neurological Surgery (ABNS) A team player who is excited to work cooperatively with a wide range of stakeholders and disciplines to champion world class patient satisfaction and support Strong clinical emphasis on elective spine and general neurosurgery. Spine Fellowship is not required but a strong plus Experience or strong desire in supporting a community-based practice The ability to participate in teaching and academic clinical promotion if desired but not required Current medical license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or the ability to obtain a license from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine is required Work, Live, and Grow: We strive to maintain an inclusive work environment for all our employees.
