Prototype Machinist
Castelion is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Machinist to support the company’s development and manufacturing of hypersonic rockets and ultra-high performance thermal protection systems. The Senior Technician will assist in hardware integration and production. A successful candidate will be a self-starter who takes full ownership of the projects they’re given, is detail-oriented, and thinks creatively to solve technical problems. This role coordinates closely with the entire Castelion engineering team to eliminate roadblocks to achieving the company’s technical goals
Responsibilities
- Review samples, and or drawings to understand specifications of parts being made
- Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job
- Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping
- Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes, mills) and position or load material for a job
- Determine tooling needed and machine set up to complete task given
- Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues
- Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages
- Able to machine parts with various angles and thicknesses holding a .003 tolerance
- Knowledge and use of basic hand tools as well as pneumatic tool (e.g. Drill motors, angle grinders)
Requirements and skills
- Proven experience as machinist with a minimum of 5 years
- Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines (lathes, mills, and grinders etc.)
- Ability to use precision tools (e.g. calipers, indicators) to take accurate measurements
- Knowledge of the properties of metal and other material
- Ability to read blueprints, drawings and schematics
- Good at math with analytical abilities
- Physical stamina and strength to lift heavy items 25lbs or more
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of vocational training or an apprenticeship will be an asset

Successfully bring in applicable processes/concepts/materials from other industries to achieve efficiency gains. Ability to personally resolve minor issues in development without requiring significant support.

A successful candidate will have a genuine passion for Castelion’s mission and consistently look for ways to contribute to the company’s technical goals and prevent hardware blockers. Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere. Strong sense of accountability and integrity.
Clear Communicator. Proactively communicates blockers. Trusted in previous roles to be voice of company with regulators, suppliers, gate keepers and customers. Capable of tactfully managing relationships with stakeholders to achieve company-desired outcomes without compromising relationships. Emails, IMs and verbal interactions are logical, drive clarity, and detailed enough to eliminate ambiguity.

- To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
