Job Summary:

The School Nurse is responsible for assessing the health needs of students; developing emergency care plans and individual health plans, incorporating input from parents and/or physicians; complying with the laws relating to student health, including parental and guardian consent; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; providing health information and serving as a resource to parents, teachers, staff and administrators.


This is a part-time position, two days per week for 10 months each year from mid-August to mid-June.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process and established health protocols.
  • Administer first aid, authorized health treatments and CPR/AED per established procedures to students, staff and persons on school grounds, as necessary.
  • Assess student health concerns, communicate with parents and guardians regarding individual students and ensure appropriate referrals and follow-up as needed; serve as a liaison between school personnel, families, health care professionals and the community.
  • With parental written consent, dispense over-the-counter medications and/or prescription medication.
  • Inform employees of CPR and first aid educational training resources
  • Orders supplies and materials as needed to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the health room.
  • Maintain security and safe handling of all medications, including administration and documentation; follow established OWS policies and procedures
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records, and other documents, including clinic records and accurate and confidential student health records such as immunization records for immunization, medication administration and individual student treatment
  • Provide student medical information and resources for field trips and student activities
  • Acts as a liaison between physician orders and the schoolhouse
  • Serves as an interpreter of health mandates, recommendation, and trends
  • Develop emergency action plans for students at risk of medical crises at school or during a school function
  • Provide training for staff for students with chronic illness who may require periodic assessment and/or adaptation for a health-related learning environment
  • Implement communicable disease control in the school, including monitoring, surveillance and participation in disease prevention and outbreak management
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to the administrative team

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required Education & Experience:

  • Valid Washington State Registered Nurse license
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Previous experience working in a K-12 school setting is preferred
