School Crossing GuardSchool crossing guards are responsible for the safe and orderly crossing of school-aged children to and from school at their assigned post location.The School Crossing Guard reports to the School Crossing Guard Supervisor.Key duties include: assisting school-aged children across streets and roadways to and from school, teaching children the proper way to cross the roadway in accordance with the Florida School Crossing Guard Training Guidelines, maintaining order by directing children to proper crossing areas and encouraging behavior conducive to safe travel, being aware of conditions and situations that could be potentially hazardous to pedestrians and/or motorists and reporting these conditions to his/her supervisor and/or the NEXTAFF office, reporting suspicious individuals and/or activities in and around school areas, notifying supervisor of children behaving unsafely in traffic, recruiting new crossing guards; and assisting and participating in recruitment and/or community relations activities as requested, attending meetings and trainings as required, and other duties as assigned.Qualifications include: good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly to avoid danger from errant vehicles; ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddles STOP message during the entire crossing movement; ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously; ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in enough time to avoid injury; mental alertness; neat appearance; good character; dependability; and an overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
