AP Professionals has partnered with a local manufacturer in search of a Environmental Health Safety Specialist. The Environmental Health Safety Specialist acts as a technical resource, ensuring the company adheres to Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) standards. The primary responsibility is to develop, implement, and maintain a robust EHS management system across the entire manufacturing campus. This role involves both individual and cross-functional team efforts to drive continuous improvement.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, update, and implement EHS procedures.
  • Coordinate and follow up on EHS audits.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs.
  • Respond to EHS incidents promptly.
  • Coordinate and document job hazard analyses.
  • Manage hazardous and industrial waste storage, transportation, and disposal.
  • Identify and implement EHS improvement opportunities.
  • Stay updated on applicable EHS regulations and standards.
  • Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies (OSHA, NYSDEC, US EPA, etc.).
  • Model safe and environmentally responsible workplace behavior.
  • Investigate EHS injury and incident reports and implement preventative measures.
  • Maintain the OSHA 300 log of workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Submit the annual OSHA 300a report and post it in all required locations.
  • Monitor injury and illness trends and recommend workplace improvements.
  • Communicate EHS metrics and relevant information to employees via Safety Dashboards (updated weekly).
  • Develop and maintain the Emergency Action Plan, including facility maps, procedures, and training/drills for the campus.
  • Recruit Emergency Response Team (E-Team) volunteers and maintain First Aid, AED, CPR, and Narcan training programs.
  • Coordinate periodic inspections of fire extinguishers, eyewashes, first aid cabinets, and AEDs.
  • Maintain permits for fire alarm systems through the local Fire Prevention Office.
  • Develop, interpret, and maintain job hazard analyses for employees.
  • Ensure accessible and appropriate First Aid and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) supplies, including a PPE vending service.
  • Coordinate the purchase and delivery of safety shoes through qualified providers.
  • Develop and maintain the Hazard Communications Program, including safety data sheets (SDSs), chemical inventory, and employee training.
  • Provide EHS training for new employees and necessary refresher training for all employees (e.g., emergency evacuation, bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication, Lockout-Tagout, electrical safety, ergonomics).
  • Coordinate Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) and Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) training for designated employees.
  • Maintain records of PIT/MEWP training.
  • Conduct workplace noise surveys as needed to identify hearing protection zones.
  • Coordinate annual hearing tests, conservation training, and follow-up for designated employees through qualified providers.
  • Manage pest control services and allowable pesticide lists with qualified providers.
  • Collaborate with external risk management professionals and property insurance representatives to identify and reduce workplace hazards.
  • Lead the Safety Improvement Team, investigating and implementing improvement suggestions.
  • Identify and close potential EHS compliance gaps in partnership with the management team.
  • Develop and deliver Hazardous Waste (RCRA) and Hazardous Materials (DOT) training for designated employees annually.
  • Maintain certification in 49 CFR 172 Hazmat Ground Shipping and 6 NYCRR Hazardous Waste Management.
  • Inspect hazardous chemical storage areas weekly, document inspections, and coordinate follow-up actions.
  • Maintain NYSDEC Air Emissions Registration Permits for the manufacturing facility.
  • Maintain waste generator registration with USEPA/NYSDEC.
  • Coordinate shop towel and spill absorbent inventory and recycling services with qualified providers.
  • Manage the storage, shipment, and disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Oversee the used battery recycling program.
  • Maintain manifests and records of hazardous and industrial waste shipments.
  • Prepare and submit waste reports to external agencies and internal teams.
  • Inspect external treatment, storage, and disposal facilities for compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Participate in external compliance inspections/audits and follow up.
  • Maintain biennial MSC-150 registration with US DOT.
  • Maintain training records for DOT drivers.
  • Coordinate with the supply chain team to obtain and maintain records of restricted materials in raw materials.
  • Assist in preparing sustainability and social compliance assessments, including waste/emissions estimates and other EHS metrics.
  • Assist with responses to sustainability and social compliance-related audits and customer inquiries.
  • Monitor trends in restricted materials and other product-related sustainability attributes; collaborate with supply chain, marketing, and customer service teams to implement proactive measures.
  • Coordinate periodic employee e-waste collection and recycling events and maintain records for sustainability reporting.


EDUCATION

  • High school diploma, G.E.D, or equivalent required; an Associate's degree is preferred.


EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in safety administration.
  • Experience in the printing and packaging industry is preferred.
