John Evans Recruiting is representing a premier 250-employee seafood company in Baltimore in their search for a Purchasing Manager with seafood procurement experience and strong team leadership abilities.


Reporting to the President, the Purchasing Manager will lead a seasoned team of six buyers in sourcing top-quality seafood, various food products, potential dry goods, and equipment from global markets at competitive prices.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management through creating, administering, and maintaining the company’s buying procedures, directing and coordinating all department activities, and developing short- and long-range goals and objectives to meet business and profitability growth objectives.
  • Review and analyze costs, product availability, market trends, industry issues and forecast data to determine department progress toward stated goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with operations, sales, customer service, and QA/QC departments to identify and develop needs and requirements for equipment, materials, products, and acceptable substitutions.
  • Assess current material availability; reasonably predict future availability based on the market, delivery systems, and other variables.
  • Administer the departmental budget.
  • Prepare and present market conditions and merchandise cost reports.
  • Act as liaison with vendors about all product and shipment issues. Resolve grievances with vendors, contractors, and suppliers. Act as the company’s representative in negotiations with suppliers. Verify that vendors maintain qualifications. Propose improvement to current system/process that will improve vendor relationships and reduce costs.
  • Maintain and/or implement purchasing and recordkeeping systems. Oversee key performance indicators, processes, performance, data and analysis for weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Develop, review, update and implement strategic planning including the development of new product sources, pricing, product development, and market expansion.
  • Work with sales to facilitate resolution of customer opportunities and satisfaction.
  • Create, implement, and maintain a consistent training program for all the Buyers, Account Managers, Customer Service Representatives, and Operational employees who need to be knowledgeable of products.
  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the buying department which includes goal setting for employees and team, providing continuous feedback to employees, and completing written annual and semi-annual reviews for buying team.
  • Hire, manage, and oversee the daily workflow and schedules of six buyers.
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field is strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in a comparable purchasing role.
  • Seafood purchasing/procurement experience is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and ability to read and understand P&L statements.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Experience supervising multiple direct reports and collaborating across departments.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • May require travel.
