This individual's drive and motivation to excel in their craft will be showcased in their performance, positive attitude, and ability to complete assignments in a timely manner.Under close supervision to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair and custodial work on Agency buildings, facilities and pumping station equipment; to learn the more difficult and specialized maintenance, repair assignments; to learn basic equipment operation skills; and to perform other job-related work as required.Maintenance Worker I -- This is the entry and trainee level classification for positions assigned to basic labor, repair, maintenance tasks and custodial duties of the Agency buildings, facilities, and grounds required to ensure that all are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for Agency and public use. Employees should have basic mechanical and/or electrical knowledge, skills and aptitudes but no previous experience with the types of equipment, facilities, or buildings associated with wastewater facilities. Employees in this class normally work under the close and continuous supervision of more experienced staff performing a group of relatively repetitive or closely related duties according to established procedures. While a variety of tasks may be assigned, each step usually fits a pattern which has been established and explained before work is commenced. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during its performance and upon completion, and changes in procedure or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Advancement to the "II" level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the assigned functions and is at the discretion supervisory or management staff.Maintenance Worker II -- This is the full journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series providing the full range of repair, maintenance, and custodial duties on Agency buildings, facilities and pumping station equipment. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of repair and maintenance work on wastewater treatment facilities and pumping station equipment and facilities. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working on a more independent basis, applying developed skills, and exercising judgment and initiative. Assignments are performed with the expectation that incumbents have the ability to choose among alternatives in solving job problems and work productively in the occasional absence of a supervisor. Positions at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Work is normally reviewed only on completion and for overall results. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Maintenance Worker II level are normally filled by advancement from the Maintenance Worker I level.Essential FunctionsAssists with the maintenance and repair of buildings, ground, plant facilities, and lift stations; performs a variety of semi-skilled and heavy physical labor.Inspects buildings, offices, and yards for safety hazards, and maintenance needs.Cleans and removes debris and trash from parking lots, buildings and yards; washes vehicles and cleans interiors; pressure cleans heavy equipment, trucks and tools.Washes down equipment and facilities; uses a variety of hand tools and equipment; loads and unloads equipment and material; cuts brush, controls traffic during maintenance, repair and construction assignments. May be required to work unusual hours, shifts, and respond to emergency situations. Cleans spills and breakage, washes, vacuums, sweeps, mops and dusts; sets up and takes down meeting equipment; picks up, delivers and moves boxes, furniture, supplies, parts and materials.Repairs plumbing leaks and clogged drainsPerforms other job-related duties as assigned.QualificationsKnowledge of:Safe work practices, procedures and equipment pertaining to work.Methods, materials and tools used in building maintenance and construction, landscape maintenance, and irrigation systems.Techniques used for servicing vehicles, power tools and equipment in routine building and repair.Cleaning supplies, equipment and custodial methods.Proper materials and procedures used for cleaning purposes.Basic tools used in routine building and equipment maintenance and repair.Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, and policies.Recordkeeping principles and procedures.English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and Agency staff, in person and over the telephone.Ability to:Learn to perform preventive maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of mechanical equipment used in a wastewater collection system, pumping stations, and treatment plant, including pumps, piping and valves, emergency power generating equipment, odor control systems, and other machinery; performs basic metal fabrication, plumbing, painting, carpentry, and general housekeeping duties.Learn to use the more complex hand tools and equipment; learn basic motorized equipment operation skills.Learn to perform mechanical maintenance and repair work on machinery, facilities, and equipment.Learn to diagnose mechanical problems and develop corrective repair procedures.Learn basic welding, metal fabrication and machine tool work.Use the tools and testing equipment required for mechanical maintenance and repair work.Maintain equipment records and parts inventories.Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.Effectively communicate in person, over the telephone, two-way radio, and in writing.Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.Work collaboratively in a team environment including ability to accept constructive criticism from co-workers.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.Pass Agency physical examination, which may include pre-employment assessment of safe work capacity in comparison to the essential job functions for the position.Education and Experience: Any combination of experience and education/training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented. Maintenance Worker I: Two (2) years of building and grounds maintenance experience. One-year heavy physical labor work experience involving the repair and maintenance of public works facilities is highly desirable. Maintenance Worker II: Four (4) years of years of building and grounds maintenance experience or two (2) years of experience equivalent to Maintenance Worker II with the Agency. One-year heavy physical labor work experience involving the repair and maintenance of public works facilities is highly desirable. Licenses and Certifications: Maintenance Worker I/II: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Driver's License and be insurable with the Agency's insurance at the standard rate and continue to meet established driving standards as a condition of employment for this position. Persons employed in this classification are required to participate in Agency provided training to acquire basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates during the initial 12 months of employment and continued maintenance of valid certificates as a condition of employment for this position.
