Executive Medical Director, Oncology, Sutter East Bay Medical Group

Sutter East Bay Medical Group is seeking an experienced, innovative, and collaborative oncologist to lead our Comprehensive Cancer program. The Sutter Health East Bay Market is one of six market areas for Sutter Health, an integrated healthcare network headquartered in Sacramento, CA. Sutter plans to open a brand-new state of the art comprehensive cancer center in Oakland in the spring of 2026 which will be co-branded with an NCI designated academic medical center. In advance of the 2026 Oakland cancer center opening, other key East Bay oncology locations will be opened as premier oncology centers.

We are seeking an Executive Medical Director for Oncology. This Executive Medical Director will report to the SEBMG CMO and will collaborate with the operational Oncology Service Line Executive in a dyad partnership to build oncology clinical teams and programs.

Sutter Health provides equitable care to our communities, including cancer care, regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic status, or insurance coverage. Our integrated network collectively detects seventeen thousand new cancer cases annually and cares for patients at twenty integrated cancer centers. Our physician network is comprised of more than two hundred medical and radiation oncology clinicians working together to create programs of distinction in many clinical areas. As we expand cancer care in the east bay, we plan to expand the clinical trials available to our patients which currently number more than 150 across our network. While Sutter Health already has centers of excellence in neuro-oncology, hematologic malignancy, and cellular therapies, the Executive Medical Director will guide in the development of additional programs of distinction in the east bay.

Founded in 2005, Sutter East Bay Medical Group (SEBMG) is a rapidly growing multi-specialty medical group whose more than 400 clinicians provide care in clinics and hospitals in the San Francisco East Bay Area. SEBMG is affiliated with the Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation (SEBMF), a not-for-profit health care organization providing operational and administrative support to the group.

The ideal candidate for Executive Medical Director is an innovative leader in the field of cancer care. We are specifically seeking someone who has demonstrated clinical expertise combined with proven research qualifications. The Executive Medical Director will partner with medical group, hospital, and system leaders and will also function as a dyad partner to the Sutter Health operational oncology service line executive to implement our cancer care strategy. Because the Executive Medical Director will be shaping and overseeing strategy, quality, and programmatic development, they must be a visionary physician who is able to optimize patient access and quality while leveraging best practices and technology. A candidate who possesses expertise in change management is ideal. The position requires an individual who is highly relational, confident in their abilities, and able to build new programs and services. We are seeking individuals who have experience running oncology services, ideally in a community setting, with some background in academic medicine. This individual will lead the strategic growth planning and determine what future resources are needed to support growth in the next 10 years. The Executive Medical Director will be expected to spend one half of their time providing clinical care and one half of their time as a leader for the oncology service line at SEBMG.
