OSP Design and Make Ready Engineer

The Make Ready Engineer will be responsible for all make ready work associated with fiber optic projects, including pole loading analysis, field data review, and application submission. The Make Ready Engineer must be a subject matter expert on all aspects of technical components required for field development and an advanced knowledge of OSP engineering and field design methodology. Should be an expert in joint use. The ideal candidate for this role should show initiative and be motivated to grow and learn.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Field Research & Design

·       Analyze data to produce a cost-effective engineered design for construction to install messenger strand, anchors and fiber attachments.

·       Perform field visits to collect data and conduct field surveys.

·       Identifies and documents detailed information of facilities on utility poles for proper separation and clearance to include utility ownership.

·       Records utility pole condition, bonding, grounding, guying and anchor information to perform Make-Ready analysis for aerial routes.

·       Review structural evaluations of utility poles using PLA (pole loading analysis) software desired.

·       Ability to utilize tools such as measuring wheel, height stick, pull finders, and vault hooks.

·       Ability to read and understand maps, conduit records and layout drawings.

·       Research and document requirements on aerial construction by pole owner and jurisdictional requirements for design and permitting processes.

·       Review pole owner make ready requirements to determine the validity of the scope. 

Administrative Work

·       Attends various meetings with management, departments, and vendors to ensure company objectives are met.

·       Work with PMO and provide regular updates on schedule, delays, and what steps may be required to mitigate the delays.

Minimum Qualifications:

·       Associate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Construction Management or equivalent experience preferred.

·       A minimum of 5 years of experience in Outside Plant Field Engineering, Construction Management, or OSP Field Inspector. 

·       Ability to travel for business requirements; possess a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

·       Ability to communicate orally and in writing and give effective presentations to Supervisors and Managers. Additionally, able to constructively escalate problems and issues.

·       Ability to work independently and with a team of senior-level engineers and supervisors to develop solutions to complete assigned tasks.

·       Intermediate knowledge of outside plant engineering, field design methods, and Telecom products.

·       Working knowledge of city/county/DOT/Railroad permit process.

·       Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

·       AutoCAD or similar tool experience is recommended.

·       Experience in GIS software (ArcGIS, 3GIS, Vetro Fiber, IQGeo, or similar) is a plus.

·       Experience in PLA (Pole Loading Analysis) software is a plus.

·       Working knowledge of NESC standards for cable attachment spacing regulations on a utility pole, mid-span, down guy and anchoring, and grounding requirements as well as pole condition.

·       Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer  
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Will require travel as needed
