Position Overview

As a Phlebotomist at Our Lady of Hope Clinic, you will play a crucial role in our patient care operations. Working under the direction of the Executive Director, you will be responsible for performing venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures with precision and compassion. Your efforts will contribute to the efficient delivery of healthcare services and ensure an exceptional patient experience. The Phlebotomist position is a full-time, hourly position. Compensation ranges from $20 to $22 per hour, commensurate with training and experience. Proficiency in English and Spanish is required.


Duties and Responsibilities

·        Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.

·        Performs screening tests and reports results.

·        Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.

·        Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the ordering physician.

·        Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.

·        Maintains compliance with laboratory, clinic, and safety policies, procedures, and practices. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.

·        Verifies positive patient identification to ensure patient safety. Assesses patient reactions to specimen procurement.

·        Performs Venipuncture and collects other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol. Obtains medical assistance when judged necessary.

·        Assists in maintaining clinic schedule by obtaining specimens. Ensures completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol. Ensures that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing.

·        Processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification.

·        Performs laboratory result entry in the computer system.

·        Medical interpretation for clinic physicians when needed and as time permits.


Required Skills/Abilities

·        Native or functionally native proficiency in both English and Spanish (REQUIRED).

·        Knowledge of medical terminology and certification for CPR preferred.

·        Demonstrates knowledge and experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function.

·        Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.

·        Keyboarding and typing skills.

·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good listening skills.

·        Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

·        Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees.


Education and Experience

·        High school diploma or the equivalent.

·        Previous experience or education in a health-related field helpful.

·        Phlebotomy certification preferred.


Physical Requirements

·        Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

·        Must be able to sit, stand, walk and bend the majority of the workday.

·        May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radioactive and/or infectious agents.

·        Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids.

·        Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.

·        Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
