FirefighterSalary by position: Firefighter - $47,862.50-$58,631.56 Firefighter/EMT - $52,768.41-$64,641.30 Firefighter/Paramedic - $61,086.03-$74,830.38This position responds to fire and other emergency incidents to suppress fires, rescue victims, provide emergency medical care, and perform other duties as required.Examples Of DutiesMajor duties include:Operating a variety of pumps, ladders, hoses, and other equipment at the scene of fire, rescue, and other emergency incidents.Completing required reports detailing fire, emergency medical, and other incident responses.Completing required training and maintaining required certifications.Inspecting equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; washing and cleaning equipment on a regular basis; repairing and performing routine maintenance on equipment; ensuring the proper functioning of all equipment and vehicles.Maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies aboard vehicles; conducting regular inspections.Providing fire prevention information to the public; assisting in teaching fire safety classes; providing tours of the fire station.Performing housekeeping, grounds keeping, and building maintenance duties.Conducting station and apparatus tours for school and other community groups.Participating in public education events.Conducting pre-incident planning on commercial and residential structures as requested.Inspecting and servicing fire hydrants.Assisting with fire investigations to determine cause and origin of fires.Performing related duties.Typical QualificationsMinimum qualifications include:Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.Possession of or ability to readily obtain Florida Certified Firefighter II certification.Current CPR certification.Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate state EMT certification within one year of hire.Possession of and ability to maintain Florida EMT certification.Possession of current Florida Paramedic certification.Possession of and ability to maintain appropriate state Paramedic certifications.Current PALS and ACLS certifications.Supplemental InformationKnowledge required by the position includes:Knowledge of the operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires.Knowledge of firefighting standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and equipment.Knowledge of rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures of the department.Knowledge of equipment maintenance principles.Knowledge of hydrant locations, water systems, and water mains.Knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes.Knowledge of hazardous materials.Skill in the operation of all firefighting, rescue, and other equipment, including motor vehicles.Skill in extrication techniques.Skill in the use of a computer and a records management system.Skill in the use of radios and communication equipment.Skill in interpersonal relations.Skills in oral and written communication.Additional knowledge required by the position includes:Knowledge of emergency medical protocols, principles, and practices.Knowledge of emergency medical standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and equipment.Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.Supervisory controls include:The Fire Lieutenant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.Guidelines include:Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws and regulations; medical protocols; and City and Department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.Complexity/scope of work includes:The work consists of varied fire suppression, emergency medical, and other emergency response duties. The variety of emergency situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work.Contacts are typically with:Co-workers, other City employees, representatives of other emergency response agencies, local business owners, and the public.Contacts typically give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and educate the public.Physical demands/work environment includes:The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather.
