The IC division manufactures, sells, and services liquid coatings used in the Performance, Polymer Flooring, Insulative, Marine, and Fire Protection Coatings Markets. The Life Last polyurethane coatings are widely utilized in steel water pipeline and other infrastructure applications. The R&D Chemist will be responsible for developing new coatings formulation and optimizing existing formulations, while supporting the commercial teams to solve customer application needs and new business launches.


Position Responsibilities

  • Develops formulations for new products and/or existing product modifications/improvements
  • Researches new materials, ingredients, and processes to develop bench-scale batches for next generation products
  • Performs stability, quality, and safety testing for new and improved product formulations
  • Calculates laboratory scale formulas and coverts them to large scale manufacturing formulas, ensuring successful technology transfer and scale-up for commercialization initiatives
  • Documents all formulations and manufacturing and develops quality control specifications in alignment with industry quality standards
  • Supports commercial efforts to grow our business as needed through introduction of new and/or improved product formulations
  • Works collaboratively across the IC Division and other groups inside Henkel to share new technology developments and leverage existing technology that can be applied from other areas where possible


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Masters or PHD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related scientific/technical discipline
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in coatings formulation development and in support of a production facility, preferably in urethane coatings chemistry
  • Must possess a successful history in formulating innovative products and successfully commercializing them through product introduction in the field
  • Proven skills in creating strong and collaborative relationships with raw material suppliers (externally) and colleagues (internally) in other technical groups
  • Strong project management skills. Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines
  • Ability to lead and communicate orally, in written documents, and in formal presentations when required
  • Problem analysis and problem resolution
  • Knowledge and understanding of raw material interactions and performance in paint formulations and of relevant testing associated with different types of coatings products
  • Knowledge of industrial standards that pertain to laboratory management, including the safe use, storage, and disposal of chemicals
