Senior Utilities Service Worker

Job TitleUnder the guidance and leadership of the Public Works Director, this is skilled work performing a variety of maintenance, construction, repair, and location tasks within the Underground Utilities Division. This position facilitates the daily work schedule. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, and decisions are made within the scope of specific assignments. Assignments are received in oral and written form, and work is subject to frequent review and inspection by the underground utilities' leadership.This position is designated as an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.Major duties include:May direct one or more team members and participate in the daily work routine.Performs all tasks necessary for the water and sewer systems.Organizes work orders and the daily work schedule to maximize work performance.Maintains a safe work environment.Assists Foreman with day-to-day work assignments.Operates and maintains chlorinators daily as assigned.Responds to work orders and service requests to investigate, install or make repairs to water or sewer lines.Operates sewer cleaning equipment.Operates line-stopping and tapping equipment.May be required to take weekend callout as needed.Performs other duties as assigned.Knowledge, abilities and skills include:Ability to work during inclement weather conditions.Ability and desire to comply with all City safety policies and programs in the performance of their work to include, but not limited to, vehicles, equipment, tools and facilities.Ability to work from blueprints, rough sketches and maps.Ability to understand, follow and communicate in writing in an effective, cooperative and team-focused manner.Ability to perform heavy manual labor (digging, lifting, etc) for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools of one or more of the masonry and pavement trades.Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and take precautionary methods to protect oneself and others.Basic knowledge of DOT specifications and other regulations pertaining to this trade.Ability to plan, organize and train one or more fellow team members.Ability to understand and transmit oral and written instructions in an effective and professional manner.Skilled in the use and care of pertinent tools and equipment.Ability to accurately maintain and create records and reports.Minimum qualifications include:Graduation from high school or possession of a recognized equivalency diploma.Three (3) years experience working with the repair and maintenance of water distribution and sewer transmission lines.Valid driver's license.Ability to obtain a valid Water Distribution System Operator Level III license in accordance with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations.Ability to obtain MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) Certificate.Physical demands include:Occasionally - Lift/Carry: 21+ Lbs., Push/Pull: 26+ Lbs., Squat/Kneel, Climb, Crawl, Reach above Shoulder and Reach Outward, Ability to work at heights, Ability to traverse stairs.Frequently - Lift/Carry: 10-20 Lbs. or Less, Push/Pull: 12-25 Lbs., Bend, Twist/Turn, Handling/Fine Motor Skills, Stand, Walk, Navigation in uneven surfaces and terrains, Sit, Drive, Type/Keyboard.Work environment includes:While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is outside year-round and is constantly exposed to all weather conditions.This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment).This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
