Our Opportunity

FFI Ionix are seeking a highly motivated and self-driven PEM Commercial Product Development Engineer to join our product development team aiming to develop a series of commercial line membrane separators for fuel cells, water electrolyzers and flow batteries. The ideal candidate will closely work with both the technology and manufacturing team, build and test product prototypes, evaluate production options and costs, and draft specifications for the manufacturing of new products. Candidates with previous experience in membrane product development for electrochemical application, filtration, gas separation and water purification are encouraged to apply


Location: Harrington, DE (2024) moving to Dover, DE (2025).


Key Responsibilities


  • Fabricates and tests new membrane product designs for electrochemical applications.
  • Develops unique product ideas using industry knowledge, application and customer needs.
  • Coordinates with technology and marketing team to finalize product ideas.
  • Utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) software to create new products.
  • Planning and executing a wide range of physico-chemical and electrochemical testing protocols, including performance, reliability, and durability of membrane separators in targeted application.
  • Evaluating the product prototype to identify potential safety hazards.
  • Support manufacturing with membrane scale-up process ensuring productivity and techno-economic analyses.
  • Train group technicians, student interns, or visiting collaborators/partners.
  • Present and report results and findings to the stake holders in a timely manner.
  • File inventions on new products and assist in review and monitoring of patents in competitive landscape.


Qualifications And Experience


  • Master’s degree or PhD degree in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 3-5 years of industrial experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in product development.
  • Experience in membrane fabrication technology and scale-up process.
  • Knowledge of electrochemical processes such as fuel cells, batteries and water electrolysis.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced product development, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the teams.
  • Must be a team player and passionate about renewable energy and sustainability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience and customers.
