Reliability Engineer for Thermal Systems

We are looking for a skilled Reliability Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design of reliable thermal systems for all Tesla vehicle programs and Semi. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a crucial role in designing reliability into our thermal systems from concept to manufacturing and field operation.

Tesla's thermal management system is one of the most innovative and integrated systems in the industry. You will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to understand emerging designs and architectures. Your responsibilities will include identifying risks associated with these architectures, creating test plans to assess product reliability, and providing reliability analyses and suggestions to improve our products.

To succeed in this role, you must have a genuine passion for engineering products that will shape the future. You should be self-motivated with a desire to push boundaries and deliver results under high pressure with tight schedules.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply solid knowledge of reliability methods and thermal engineering to design accelerated test plans for design validation, burn-in testing, environmental stress screening (ESS), ongoing reliability testing (ORT), and demonstration of reliability growth.
  • Analyze field usage and environmental conditions to optimize requirement setting, test methods, and reliability specifications.
  • Facilitate and lead design FMEA sessions to assess product risks, determine validation test plans, and drive reliable design choices.
  • Work with manufacturing quality, service engineering, supplier quality, and design teams to identify root causes and drive resolution for failures originating in testing and in the field.
  • Generate process validation test plans to implement at suppliers and drive root cause corrective action with suppliers to resolve production process issues.
  • Provide reliability design guidelines and apply reliability lessons learned to enable continuous improvement.
Requirements:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working on thermal systems and mechanical systems in a laboratory testing environment (including relevant internship or academic lab work experience).
  • Experience with Python, Big-data analysis, and Statistical modeling.
  • Experience with burn-in tests, Environmental Stress Screening (ESS), Ongoing Reliability Tests (ORT).
  • Understanding of Highly Accelerated testing methods and governing equations for different types of acceleration models.
  • Experience with developing reliability guidelines and inventing novel ways of reliability testing.
  • Working knowledge of reliability statistics including Weibull analysis, using Reliasoft, JMP, Minitab, etc.
  • Working knowledge of failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM, CSAM, X-ray, cross-sectioning, and EDX.
  • Self-driven and focused individual with a proven ability to manage parallel tasks effectively, with a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to remain engaged, proactive, and positive in tough circumstances.
