Basic Job Description:

The R&D Manager will play a key Leadership Role in guiding New Product Development and driving New Category Innovation on our core businesses. This person will ensure R&D activities lead to achieving Strategic Objectives, improving Sales & Market Position, and optimizing Profitability. Reporting to the General Manager, and through close partnership with the Marketing, Sales, Production, QC and Supply Chain teams — The R&D Manager will lead the development and commercialization of Line Extensions, New-to-the-World Products and Categories, and drive Process & Plant Efficiencies & Improvements leading to sizable cost savings. This person will oversee and help build the R&D department at Day-Lee Foods, Inc. - with the goal of making Day-Lee Foods a Category Leader — and giving Day-Lee Foods a Competitive Advantage in the businesses in which it competes.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Responsible for developing concepts, products, and solutions by coordinating with and monitoring plans for the R&D group, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget, in accordance with the Corporate and Department Strategic Plans and Objectives.

· Works closely with Department Staff to ensure alignment and prioritization around roadmaps, portfolio management, and budgets. Explore gaps within organization and Department Stuff and prepare plans to address gaps.

· Understand customer expectations on to-be manufactured product. Determine and execute improved technologies used by suppliers, competitors, and customers.

· Supervises R&D staff, making sure reviews are completed and objectives are set. Assist in the development of talent within the organization and makes recommendations for promotions.

· Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.


Specific Responsibilities:

· Collaborates with Marketing and Sales to develop Innovation Products & Plans.

· Helps drive continuous product and manufacturing process improvement.

· As a member of New Product Development Team, be able to interface effectively with Procurement, Finance, Production, Marketing, Sales, QC, & Operations Departments in the course of Product & Process Development.

· Leverages Consumer Insights and Emerging Technologies to guide Product Innovation & Development.

· Leverages Internal and External Resources (including co-packers) to identify Emerging Technologies and translate these into New Product Ideas that are aligned with the business strategy.

· Leads New Product Development, Process Development, and Ingredient Technology efforts to develop and commercialize new and improved products, cost optimization and quality improvement.

· Manages a complex and dynamic Project Portfolio to ensure attainment of business goals, including prioritization and execution strategy.

· Ensures robust Experimentation/Design principles and Commercialization Processes to achieve project objectives and commercial requirements (manufacturing efficiency, stability, shelf life).

· Manages R&D technical personnel, including Priority Setting, Coaching and Skill Development.

· Attends Sales Account Calls and makes Presentations as needed.

· Develops and leads annual Cost Optimization Plans.

· Develops and manages R&D Department budget, ensuring efficient utilization of resources and achievement of annual business plan.

· Collaborates with Key Customers as required to drive customer specific innovation.

· Sources and visits possible suppliers and co-packers.


EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

· Ten to 15 years working experience in a food plant and Minimum BS in Food Science or a related field required. Advanced business degree, preferably culinary training (but not essential), and knowledge of USDA and FDA. Minimum 10 years' experience in food R&D, with at least 5 years' experience leading technical professionals.

· Excellent understanding of the product development process and innovation Stage Gate principles.

· Strong knowledge of the interaction between culinary art, food science and nutrition.

· Strong knowledge of sensory and consumer research methodologies.

· Experience with packaged food safety and government regulatory requirements.

· Demonstrated ability to develop and execute technology strategy that delivers on business needs.

· Strong project management skills and excellent communication, both oral and written.

· People leadership skills and the ability to manage, mentor and develop others.

· Functional on Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet and email.

· Problem solver. Action oriented.


· Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

· Ability to manage several projects at one time.

· Ability to effectively communicate and interact throughout all levels of an organization (written & oral)

· Ability to write commercial recipes.

· Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work.

· Self-directed with the ability to work independently as well as with groups.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Must be able to lift to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job included close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

· Able to stand/walk for extended periods of time, necessary to provide production floor coverage.

· Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of walk, stand, reach over shoulder, reach overhead, reach outward, bend, talk, hear and repetitive motions stoop, kneel, crouch, and taste or smell and walk up and down staircase, carrying materials, product, and other necessary production or maintenance related items.
