Lifeguard PositionUnder the supervision of the Aquatic Director, the lifeguard works alongside members and guests, developing and monitoring the aquatic department and its programs to help ensure the safety, cleanliness, and general operations of the pools. This job announcement is not intended to be inclusive of all functions, responsibilities, and qualifications associated with the position, however, representative of the essential job functions and typical criteria considered necessary to successfully perform the position.Responsibilities:Function as a lifeguard in maintaining order, preventing accidents, rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, and enforcing pool rulesRemain calm in challenging situations and make good sound judgments, establish goals, strive for excellence, build rapport and relate well to othersReact quickly and calmly in emergencies and know emergency proceduresApply lifeguarding techniques and render first aid when neededDirect the correction of improper lifeguard practices and behaviorsMaintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and employeesMaintain current certification and complete skill checks and polishes as requiredKnow, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the aquatic areaPerform equipment checks as neededPerform chemical testing and make corrections as needed and as trainedAttend staff meetings and participate in regular in-service training sessionsFollow and enforce all pool rulesAssist with cleaning and maintenance as neededAssist in coordination of special events and activitiesEndure all checklists, reports, and paperwork are completed correctly and in a timely mannerProvide exceptional customer service by greeting all participants, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and demonstrating professional conduct at all timesAll other duties as requestedQualifications:Must be at least 15 years of ageAble to apply swimming, water safety, and rescue skillsExcellent interpersonal and problem-solving skillsStrong communication and judgement skillsCertifications or equivalent training in the following: American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/FA/AED, American Red Cross Waterpark SkillsMust regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, and occasionally move up to seventy-five (75) pounds in the form of supplies or equipmentAble to sit, stand, and bend to perform appropriate tasksMust be able to move at an appropriate pace to respond to emergenciesFollow all safety requirements of the Salina Family YMCAMay be required to stand for extended periods of timeWork in different temperature environments
