Location: Torrance, CA, US

Salary Range: $23.00 - $24.00 Hourly

General Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Assembler - Welder fabricates copper pipes, brazes, tests, charges systems with refrigerant, and troubleshoots refrigeration systems. This role involves performing a wide variety of electromechanical and mechanical sub-assembly and assembly operations to build complex instruments. Duties may include wiring, preparing, and installing cable harnesses.

Essential Job Functions

Assembly Activities

• Perform various tasks requiring knowledge of assembly techniques, tools, materials, machines, and equipment under general supervision.
• Follow all safety procedures and use required safety equipment according to company policies and practices.
• Develop, form, shape, bend, and cut copper tubing according to design specifications and quality standards using tools such as tube benders, swaggers, and cutoff machines.
• Clean and fabricate pipes using ultrasonic machines.
• Braze and assemble refrigeration components using oxyacetylene.
• Leak check brazed assemblies using vacuum pumps, argon, pressure gauges, and refrigerant leak detectors.
• Reclaim and charge refrigerant, and dispose of waste refrigerant according to EPA Clean Air Section 608.
• Assemble electromechanical instruments or fabricated parts into subassemblies or complete instruments using hand tools, power tools, and special tools or calibration equipment.
• Determine methods and sequence of assembly operations where complete information is not readily available, or follow assembly shop and production operations sheets, wire lists, samples, blueprints, schematics, and verbal instructions.
• Fit, align, calibrate, and adjust parts and mechanisms to meet tolerances and product operating and quality requirements.
• Work from engineering drawings, rough sketches, and manuals, and receive verbal or written instructions from Lead Assembler or Supervisor.
• Perform in-process and final quality inspections of assembled products.
• Examine drawings and work orders to determine the work required.
• Utilize appropriate machines and tools to install, mount, fasten, align, and adjust parts, components, wiring, and harnesses.
• Examine and test assemblies at various production stages to identify errors.
• Maintain records of the assembly process, progress, and any issues encountered.
• Provide feedback to the supervisor when deviations from accepted practices or safety issues are recognized.
• Utilize small hand tools such as wire strippers, crimpers, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and hammers.

Responsibility for Equipment

• Follow guidelines for maintaining equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and oil changes.
• Ensure proper setups and adjustments to prevent equipment damage under normal use and care.
• Calibrate pressure gauges.
• Monitor and empty hazardous waste materials, such as used oil, coordinating disposal with the service department.
• Clean and maintain brazing equipment.
• Order gas refills when reserve tanks are empty.

• Seek constant improvement in work processes and techniques.
• Ensure assembly areas are orderly and functional.
• Suggest improvements in departmental work processes and procedures.
• Maintain good communication with peers, Lead Assembler, and Supervisor.
• Attend and participate in group meetings, task force groups, etc., as needed.
• Collaborate with support engineers to develop and maintain time standards.
• Assist support engineers with the design of assemblies and units for manufacturing capability.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the Supervisor and/or Lead Assembler.

Essential Job Requirements

Education

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education and experience.
• Training in oxy-acetylene brazing of copper tubing is required; welding certification is preferred.

Experience & Minimum Qualifications

• 1-3 years of experience in brazing copper tubing, specifically for refrigeration systems.
• 3-5 years of assembly experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• HVAC Technician Certification (EPA Clean Air Section 608) is preferred.
• Ability to follow schematics and assemble wire harnesses.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, engineering prints, and schematics.
• Proficiency in basic math operations, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals with a calculator.
• Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
• Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Proficiency in using standard power hand tools, custom tools, gauges, and other calibration equipment and assembly fixtures.
• Ability to lift 25 pounds and up to 50 pounds with assistance.
• Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage time effectively.
• Established collaboration skills with the ability to communicate openly and transparently.
• Ability to comply with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
• Ability to meet production schedules.
• Exposure to and training in Six Sigma and/or lean manufacturing is preferred.

Physical Requirements & Working Environment

• Ability to work safely according to departmental procedures, especially when working with hazardous equipment and materials at high temperatures (e.g., hot torches, power tools, wire strippers, heat guns, heated cutting blades).
• Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs with assistance.
• Ability to respond successfully to multiple work pressures.
• Effective verbal communication skills with individuals and groups, both in person and over the phone.
• Ability to listen, understand, and assist in problem-solving.
• Ability to regularly use hands to maximize dexterity.
