Salary: $18.49 - $21.26 Hourly Location : Winston-Salem, NC Job Type: Full Time Job Number: 08505-R Department: Emergency Services Opening Date: 12/02/2025 Closing Date: 12/14/2025 12:00 AM Eastern General Statement of Duties Forsyth County Department of Emergency Services is seeking dedicated and passionate first responder heroes to join our team as EMTs. EMTs perform skilled work in providing basic medical care to sick or injured persons. An EMT drives an advanced life support vehicle to the scene of an emergency, provides necessary patient care to sick or injured persons, and transports persons to a medical facility. An employee in this class performs basic medical care assigned to the EMT-Basic by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services. Tact, courtesy, and firmness are required in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public. Work is performed according to established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but the employee must exercise considerable independent judgment in diagnosing a victim's condition and in providing basic patient care. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by the employee's ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. Overall physical demands for an EMT exceed the very heavy criteria. Person in this position must be able to lift over 120 lbs frequently. Distinguishing Features - Working knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques. - Working knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents. - Working knowledge of city and county geography and location of roads and streets, hospitals and nursing homes. - Working knowledge of radio communications equipment. - Skill in diagnosing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care. - Ability to drive an ambulance safely under various weather conditions. - Ability to deal with patients, their families, and others courteously, and firmly when necessary. - Ability to lift substantial weight. - Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. - Lifting over 100 lbs occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly. Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from high school or GED supplemented by courses in emergency medical care. Certification by the NC Department of Human Resources Office of Emergency Medical Services as an EMT-Basic. Must have a valid NC driver's license. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Responds to emergency calls as an ambulance driver or attendant, performs necessary rescue work, administers necessary emergency medical care, and transports persons to appropriate medical facilities. - Administers medications and performs medical procedures that have been approved for EMT-Basic by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Service. - Maintains ambulance, equipment, and supplies in proper working order. - Participates in a continuous training program in technical medical work and in ambulance service operation. - Gives talks on emergency medical services at schools. - Conducts tours of station as requested. - Cleans ambulances and stations. - Studies street and road patterns of the County. - Performs related work as necessary.
