Job Summary:
This will be a fulltime direct placement position. Phlebotomist Technicians are specialized healthcare professionals responsible for drawing blood from patients for various laboratory tests transfusions donations or research. As a Phlebotomist Technician you will play a crucial role in the diagnostic process by ensuring that blood samples are collected safely accurately and efficiently. You will work closely with patients including those who may be anxious or uncomfortable with the procedure and your ability to provide reassurance and perform the task with care is vital. Your duties will also include preparing specimens for transport to the laboratory maintaining accurate records and adhering to strict safety and infection control protocols. Phlebotomists work in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals outpatient clinics diagnostic laboratories and blood donation centers.
Patient Interaction and Preparation:
Greet patients professionally and verify their identity using proper identification procedures.
Explain the phlebotomy procedure to patients in a clear and reassuring manner addressing any concerns or questions they may have.
Prepare the patient for the blood draw by selecting the appropriate site applying a tourniquet and disinfecting the area.
Blood Collection:
Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures to collect blood samples from patients of all ages including infants children adults and elderly individuals.
Ensure the proper amount of blood is drawn for each test following specific guidelines for different types of laboratory tests.
Utilize proper techniques to minimize patient discomfort and ensure successful blood draws on the first attempt whenever possible.
Handle patients with special needs or difficult veins with care using alternative techniques or equipment as necessary.
Sample Handling and Processing:
Label all blood samples accurately with patient information and test requisition details ensuring that there are no labeling errors.
Prepare and package specimens for transport to the laboratory ensuring that they are handled in accordance with specific test requirements (e.g. refrigeration protection from light).
Maintain accurate and detailed records of all specimens collected including the date time and type of collection as well as any issues encountered during the procedure.
Infection Control and Safety:
Adhere to strict infection control protocols including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) proper disposal of sharps and hand hygiene practices.
Ensure that all equipment including needles syringes and collection tubes is sterile and used only once.
Dispose of biohazardous waste such as used needles and bloodsoaked materials according to established safety guidelines.
Monitor and maintain a clean organized and safe work environment including the phlebotomy station and supply areas.
Patient Care and Support:
Provide emotional support to patients particularly those who are anxious or uncomfortable with the blood draw procedure.
Monitor patients for adverse reactions such as dizziness or fainting and provide immediate care as needed.
Advise patients on postprocedure care such as applying pressure to the puncture site and avoiding heavy lifting.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
Accurately document all aspects of the phlebotomy procedure in the laboratory information system (LIS) or electronic health record (EHR) system.
Ensure that patient information is kept confidential and that all records comply with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Equipment Maintenance and Inventory:
Regularly inspect and maintain phlebotomy equipment such as needles tourniquets and collection tubes to ensure they are in good working order.
Monitor inventory levels of phlebotomy supplies and reorder as needed to prevent shortages.
Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the Laboratory Supervisor or Phlebotomy Coordinator.
Professional Development and Collaboration:
Stay current with advancements in phlebotomy techniques and best practices through continuing education and training opportunities.
Collaborate with laboratory staff nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth operation of the phlebotomy department.
Provide mentorship and guidance to new or less experienced phlebotomists as needed.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program is strongly preferred.
Certification:
Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) by a recognized certifying body such as the National Healthcare Association (NHA) American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) is preferred.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience in a clinical setting particularly in phlebotomy is preferred. New graduates with relevant training are encouraged to apply.
Skills:
Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling and handling.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients families and healthcare professionals.
Compassionate and patientfocused approach to care with the ability to work effectively with patients of all ages and backgrounds.
Ability to work efficiently in a fastpaced environment while maintaining a high standard of care.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
Manual dexterity and visual acuity for precise blood collection and specimen handling.
Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment as needed.
Ability to handle potentially stressful situations with professionalism and composure.
