Overview

The HIM Specialist is responsible for maintaining personal health information of Carle patients through scanning, processing and reviewing medical records in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements. The HIM Specialist will perform a variety of tasks while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and quality. The HIM Specialist maintains the integrity of the legal health record so complete and accurate records are available for patient care and business use in a timely manner.


Qualifications

  • Retrieves, sorts and prepares medical record documents for scanning and indexing.
  • Preps, scans and indexes patient financial and billing documents in support of revenue cycle activities.
  • Ensures advance care documents contain accurate and valid data before uploading them to the EHR.
  • Produces CD copies of digital images to support continuing care and release of information requests.
  • Answers all phone and fax inquiries to the department from internal and external customers.
  • Analyzes, monitors and assures completion of patient record documentation by providers and other clinical staff.
  • Meets or exceeds established HIM department productivity and quality goals and standards
  • Attends HIM department meetings and participates in HIM operations specific meetings as needed

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Previous clerical work experience strongly preferred, but not required. Strong customer service skills.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Flexible problem solver with ability to adjust positively to changes in the work environment. Experience with Windows-based applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). Ability to interpret data. Ability to build relationships. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times. Ability to concurrently manage multiple tasks and complete them on time and prioritize work. Strong analytical and technical skills to resolve routine problems by following departmental procedures with minimal guidance and supervision. Ability to communicate clearly to others by email, in-person, in writing or by telephone. Knowledge of the principles and processes for providing excellent customer service and personal service. Comfortable working in a production/deadline oriented department; detail oriented.
