We are currently looking for a full time Pilot Lab Technician to assists operator with and/or performs machine set-up for orders, safely operates machine to target trial requirements, and troubleshoots machine(s) when it is down or not performing to standard. Expected to progress up to learn all equipment and roles to provide redundancy in knowledge of machine operation and technical experience. Supports ASTRA Center with supplemental responsibilities, such as roll doctor operation, small-scale pilot lines operation, material property testing, and inventory and warehouse management.

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • Perform machine set-up to specifications outlined on the trial, safely operate machine, meet target material properties of trials, and trouble shoot machine.
    • Implement changes in process conditions or materials to meet targets of trial.
  • Resin handling: Blend resins, monitor hoppers and blend quantities, blend additional resins when needed, perform resin changeovers, direct/prompt additional blending.
  • Material testing: Perform green off-line testing for material properties, such as COF, surface energy, basis weight, gauge, etc.
  • Operate small-scale pilot lines, such as The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) lab line, etc.
  • Train others on support tasks.
  • Operate roll doctor.
  • Warehouse: support shipping and receiving of material, maintain inventory system, transport material, etc.
  • Complete and collect process paperwork, such as run condition printouts and offline testing documentation.
  • Assist maintenance with machine repairs and preventive maintenance
  • Follow good manufacturing practices
    • Ensure that the day-to-day operation of the machine is compliant with the policies and procedures which make up the Safety, SQF, and GMP requirements
    • Continuously improve the process as an individual and as a team member
    • Ensure work area is kept clean according to facility/corporate housekeeping standards
    • Ensure quality of product and divert nonconformance product to appropriate area
    • Uphold all ethical standards associated with safety, quality and food safety policies and procedures within the facility, including the TC Transcontinental Code of Conduct and Values.
    • Comply with all the standards that are followed in the TC Menasha plant, including, but not limited to - Safety, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Safe Quality Food (SQF), Continuous Improvement (CI), and any other processes established within the TC Menasha plant.
      • Report all safety, quality, and food safety problems to personnel with authority to initiate action.
      • Follow procedures for proper handling, labeling, storage, and use of various types of products within the plant or on company property.
  • Participation and involvement in associated committees or activities is highly encouraged
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of the job title listed above.

Expectations:


  • Work safely, identify unsafe work conditions, communicate to the team, and lead corrective action(s)
  • Perform inspections as needed
  • Clean machine and area as needed to maintain good housekeeping, including 5S requirements
  • Ensure materials are prepared for trial and updated in inventory system
  • Develop understanding of quality testing procedures, including proper sample handling to avoid impacting testing results, such as appearance, measurements, adhesion, & seal strength
  • Develop intermediate technical understanding of run conditions and their impact on the manufacturing and converting processes, such as temperatures, head pressure, air gap, nip impression, & various resins
  • Assist in training of safe work practices and all job responsibilities for new personnel
  • Work with and direct the machine helper, if applicable
  • Review, analyze, and correct material properties with trial owner and/or other stakeholders before and during trial
  • Be proactive in resolving off spec materials
  • Interact professionally with various parties, including peers, management, contractors, and vendors
