The Department of Surgery at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Charlotte, North Carolina, is seeking an academic Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgeon to join the Section of HPB Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology.
Position details:
- Candidates will need to have completed fellowship training in HPB surgery or Complex General Surgical Oncology with a concentration in HPB surgery.
- The position will focus on all aspects of modern HPB surgery including malignant, benign and urgent clinical conditions (pancreatitis, biliary reconstruction…) and robotic and ablative technologies.
- The Section of HPB Surgery prioritizes excellence in patient-centered care, education, and research focused on equitable, effective, and efficient healthcare delivery.
- The Section of HPB Surgery is supported by inpatient and outpatient advanced care practitioners.
- The Fellowship Council accredited HPB Surgery Fellowship program selects one candidate each year for a two-year clinical and research experience.
- Additionally, there is a one-year robotic HPB surgery fellowship. The Section of HPB Surgery has had the privilege of hosting the annual Americas Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Association Fellows Course for 13 years.
Requirements:
- Candidates should be an academic clinician-researcher at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, possess strong clinical abilities, collaborate in multidisciplinary and multi-professional environments, and aligned to a culture of quality.
- Candidates should be committed to excellent patient care, research, and active in national surgical societies.
- Candidates should also have a strong commitment to the education of residents, fellows, medical students, and advanced practice professionals (APPs).
The Department of Surgery has 101 full-time clinical faculty and 4 PhD translational and basic science researchers. The Divisions in the Department of Surgery are Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, General and Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, and Surgical Oncology. Multidisciplinary programs led by the Department of Surgery include the Center for Digestive Health and Surgery, the Acute Care Surgery Network, and Carolinas Weight Management. The Department of Surgery has over $5 million in federal research funding. HPB surgery in fully integrated into the Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. Levine Cancer Institute is a multi-site, distributed cancer treatment and research facility located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Institute has become a top-ranked program with a fully integrated and well-developed service line and a robust clinical trials program with more than 400 therapy accruals and an added 1000 other trial enrollments per year. This led to LCI achieving top 50 status for the first time in 2020 in U.S. News and World Report. With more than 25 cancer care locations across the Greater Charlottee Region of Atrium Health, LCI treats more than 19,000 total patients each year, including almost 8,500 categorical cancer cases, positioning LCI as one of the busiest clinical cancer programs in the country. The Institute operates within a unique model of care that provides diverse communities access to world-class care, close to home, with disease teams that treat patients throughout their cancer experience. LCI has developed a strong clinical trials infrastructure across all its sites, enabling oncologists in urban and rural settings to accrue to cancer trials.
Carolinas Medical Center is an 874-bed tertiary/quaternary care hospital, ACS-verified Level I trauma center with 141 ICU bed and 45 operating rooms. Carolinas Medical Center provides 24/7 support for complex and critically ill patients including a 29-bed dedicated Surgical/Trauma ICU with surgical critical care boarded coverage, advanced interventional radiology and gastrointestinal support, and a wide range of surgical subspecialists. Freestanding emergency rooms within Atrium Health provide additional access to patients and surgical consultations to all locations. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center supports one freestanding emergency room. Nevertheless, as the quartnary care hospital in the region, Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center receives patient transfers over a 150-mile radius from Charlotte, North Carolina. Atrium Health is one of the largest, most comprehensive, and integrated, public, not-for-profit systems in the nation compromising more than 7,500 licensed beds, employing nearly 72,000 people and accounting for more than 12 million patient encounters on an annual basis.
In the Fall 2025, Atrium Health will launch IRCAD North America in the Pearl, an innovation district .5 miles from the Carolinas Medical Center campus.
