Essential Performance Responsibilities To provide learning experiences to assist the students in self-understanding, self-responsibilities, and decision-making with respect to their emotional, social and academic environment. To have the students become more aware of their academic abilities and limitations. To provide opportunities for the students to become aware of their educational interests. To have students, staff, parents and the community become aware of the role and services provided by the school counselor. To collect, maintain, provide and interpret test data to assist students, staff and parents in making realistic decisions. To provide for any student, their parents, or any staff member, access to any test data on that student. To accumulate and disseminate educational, occupational, social and guidance service information to students, parents, staff and community. To counsel students individually and in small or large groups on personal and educational problems. To orientate new students to the school via small group counseling. To aid in the administration and supervision of academic testing. To interpret test results to students, parents and the teaching staff. To consult with parents about students who are having personal or academic difficulties. To aid in the academic placement and scheduling of students. To collaborate with the Child Study Team, Intervention and Referral Services Team, and Response to Intervention personnel to facilitate equal educational opportunity for students in the least restrictive environment; to coordinate Section 504 plan for identified students and serve as Section 504 case managers. To keep an open line of communications between guidance and administration. To provide in-service training for the teaching staff in areas pertaining to the guidance program. To participate and assist in the establishment of any new or innovative programs within the school. Conduct daily attendance checks on students who have been absent three days or more. Arrange for completion of assignments and/or tutoring. Consult teachers and compile assignments for students absent for a week or more. Facilitate programs to ensure the safety and well-being of students socially and emotionally, including anti-bullying, child abuse prevention, and substance abuse awareness. Facilitate implementation of the district's alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse program including prevention, assessment, intervention, referral, discipline and continuity of care for students: Assist in the effective implementation of board policies and procedures. Serve as an information resource for substance abuse curriculum development and instruction; Develop and administer intervention services in the district; Provide counseling services to pupils regarding substance abuse problems and where necessary and appropriate, cooperate with juvenile justice officials in the rendering of substance abuse treatment services. Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of New Jersey Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Knowledge of HIB policy and regulation Knowledge of 504 policy and regulation Knowledge of counseling methodology Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted during work. Qualifications Profile Valid New Jersey School Counselor Certificate Education Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Master Degree preferred. Experience Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred. REPORTS TO: Principal EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated with state and board regulations and policies by the building principal or designee. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten month year. Salary: The salary for this position shall be set in accordance with the negotiated salary guidelines in the VTEA agreement, Benefits: Full-time employees are eligible for medical, dental and vision benefits. Sick, personal, and bereavement days are provided. Certain professional development and/or training may be eligible for reimbursement. Position is eligible for membership in TPAF.
