Job Description Summary
The Director of Residence Life is a staff member in the Division of Student Life (SL) and provides visionary leadership and administrative oversight to the Office of Residence Life (ORL) by providing guidance, strategic direction, and support for the overall mission and goals of the residential program at Miami University. The Director operates within the strategic framework of the division of Student Life and partners closely with other SL departments. They also facilitate collaboration with campus partners, including faculty, in order to provide students with a safe and vibrant learning environment that supports the academic mission of Miami University.
The Director provides leadership and supervision of a diverse staff including 11 central and administrative staff members, nearly 40 live-in residence life professional and graduate student staff, and more than 250 student staff members. This individual has responsibility for a budget totaling over 6 million dollars and reports to the Associate Vice President/ Dean of Students in the Division of Student Life.
The Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of students by evolving and executing the ORL Pillars of Success to promote academic success, effective community engagement, intrapersonal development and cultural competency of our residents.
Job Description
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Provide effective, collaborative and progressive leadership in the development and communication of organizational vision and goals for an extensive residence life office that operates within the strategic framework of the division of Student Life. Lead strategic planning. Be responsive to changes in campus needs. Stay current with national trends and promote innovation in programs and services.
Evaluate and manage staffing patterns for professional, graduate and student staff. Supervise, train and evaluate full-time professional staff members including direct supervision of Associate Directors and administrative support staff.
Manage crises and serious incidents in collaboration with the Dean of Students Office, Campus Police, and others as needed.
Provide vision for living learning communities, create opportunities for partnership, and communicate regularly with faculty members, academic departments, schools, and colleges to support effective living learning and other affinity communities.
Manage departmental budgets and promote fiscal responsibility and accountability to ensure appropriate expenditures consistent with needs, goals, and priorities of the Office.
Foster and direct diversity initiatives and efforts within the Office of Residence Life through demonstrating cultural competence in race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and national origin and other areas of diversity.
Provide leadership for Residence Life initiatives including: Resident Assistant recruitment, student leadership development, Resident Assistant training and development, second year programs, student academic support, and professional staff training and Development or other divisional initiatives
Develop and coordinate evaluation and assessment strategies in an effort to encourage continuous improvement in the Office of Residence Life.
Develop and design policies and programs related to the residential living learning experience.
Contribute to Student Life priorities through the work of ORL, including: community and belonging, diversity and inclusion, academic support, student transitions, health and wellness, and leadership and engagement.
Serve as a member of the University’s Institutional Preparedness Team, Crisis Management Team, and the Care Team. Serve on University, Divisional and Departmental committees and task forces as needed. Serve as a member of the Dean of Students leadership team.
Support the initiation, planning, and evaluation of programming activities planned by students, community leadership teams, and other residential organizations.
Assist with University, divisional, and departmental student recruitment and retention initiatives including collaborating with other offices in activities geared towards positively affecting student success.
Teach departmental or divisional related courses, such as UNV 101 (as needed).
Provide leadership and direction regarding incidents of misconduct in the halls. Support the department’s role in the adjudication process. Review incident reports and support in-hall staff in response and resolution.
Integrate knowledge regarding students and their development into daily interactions and activities.
Serve as a role model for all residence life staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors.
Participate in departmental and divisional professional development activities.
Serve as the liaison to other University offices; Work collaboratively with the division of Housing, Dining, Recreation, and Business Services, specifically, Campus Services and the Physical Facilities Department (PFD) to provide support to students and address occupancy, facilities, and planning initiatives; Interact regularly with the Office of Community Standards (OCS), the Dean of Students Office, Miami Police Department, and Student Counseling Services.
Support and advance the connection with the Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) graduate program.
Oversee the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life.
Interpret and implement Miami University, policies, rules, and procedures.
Serve in emergency on-call rotation with other senior Student Life members, as needed.
Fulfill other general duties assigned by the Division of Student Life and/or Miami University.
Minimum Qualifications
A master’s degree, preferably in College Student Personnel, Higher Education/Student Affairs or a related field plus at least 8 years of full-time post-master’s progressive leadership experience.
Post-masters experiences in residence life, supervision, developing and maintaining effective cross campus partnerships, as well as a proven ability to relate to diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate in College Student Personnel, Higher Education/Student Affairs, or related area.
Professional experience utilizing room assignment software, residential experience/engagement tracking software and student conduct management software.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Background with directing and supporting residential functions on a college campus.
Experience managing crisis, emergency and urgent situations; understanding of risk management and emergency management planning and response.
Demonstrated strong attention to detail coupled with an ability to manage competing demands and problem solve; responsive to the needs of others.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Record of innovative leadership that is able to change as campus and national conditions change, with an ability to inspire short and long term initiatives and goals.
Well versed in policy and current trends who can provide leadership and direction within the context of Miami University.
Developed background in supervision and management with a focus on relationship building and accountability.
