RESPONSIBILITIES:


A Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing and accurately assigning appropriate medical codes to diagnoses, procedures and services provided by healthcare providers. These codes are used for billing purposes, insurance claims, and maintaining accurate medical records. Medical Coders play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and facilitating efficient reimbursement processes.


  • Review medical records, patient charts and documentation to accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes using standard classification systems, i.e. ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of coded data with relevant healthcare regulations, guidelines, and coding conventions.
  • Work closely with healthcare providers, physicians, nurses, and other medical staff to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
  • Abstract relevant information from medical records to assign appropriate codes, ensuring proper sequencing and specificity.
  • Stay updated with changes in coding guidelines, regulations, and industry standards to maintain proficiency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with billing and reimbursement teams to ensure timely and accurate submission of coded claims to insurance companies and other payers.
  • Conduct audits and coding reviews to identify coding errors, patterns of non-compliance, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in training programs, workshops, and continuing education activities to enhance coding knowledge and skills.
  • Provide coding expertise and support to other healthcare professionals and administrative staff as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or equivalent certification from recognized accrediting bodies.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
  • Proficiency in coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • At least 1 years’ experience in medical coding or healthcare administration is preferred.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software applications.
