The Ballistics and Explosives Engineering Section within the Engineering Dynamics Department conducts ballistics and explosives research, to include computational modeling and experiments, with an emphasis on ballistic and explosive experiments.
Objectives of this Role:- Assist project engineers and other technicians with the setup, execution, and analysis of ballistic and explosive experiments.
- As an Electronics Technician, focus will be on instrumentation, to include high-speed video cameras, configuration of high-intensity lighting, and flash x-ray imaging of ballistic events.
- Other instrumentation includes the use of data acquisition systems with sensors for measuring pressure, temperature, displacement, strain, and others.
- Installation of these sensors and the recording of their signals during testing is a primary task.
- Multi tasking is often required.
- In addition to electronic-specific duties, candidate assists with other tasks during experiments, such as the setup/teardown of targets, measurement of target damage, fabrication of target fixtures, etc.
- Much of our work is outdoors. Our remote sites are dusty when it is dry, muddy when it is wet, cold during the winter, hot during the summer.
- Although shift work is not required, overtime (sometimes extensive overtime) may be required.
- Work is seldom required on the weekend.
- Assists with setup, execution, and wrap-up of ballistic and explosive experiments on a daily, weekly, and/or monthly basis.
- Assists with analysis of data collected during ballistic and explosive experiments, such as the measurement of projectile velocity from high-speed video images.
- Analyzes the response of targets to ballistic and explosive experiments, which may include measuring the amount of damage resulting from the test.
- Part of a test team that occasionally performs experiments at one of our two remote test sites, one of which is a 2-hour drive from the San Antonio campus. This may require overnight stays in a motel in Uvalde, Texas for up to 4 nights in a row.
- Much of our work is outdoors and requires fairly strenuous physical activity.
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Electronics Technician AS degree or trade school preferred.
- 5 years: Electronics experience. The instrumentation we implement during our experiments is unique and exact equipment experience is not required.
- General appreciation/desire to work with and be involved with electronic equipment is a must.
- Material moving equipment experience (forklifts, backhoes, etc.) or the desire to learn along with experience with hand tools and the ability to learn quickly.
- Fabricate (weld, cutting torch use, grinder use, etc.) or the desire to learn. The remote site work can require out-of-town overnight stays during the course of a test program (could be up to 4-nights per week).
- A valid/clear driver's license is required.
