Part-Time Permit TechnicianThe City of Monterey Park is accepting applications for a part-time Permit Technician.Apply today to join the Building & Safety division of our Community Development department.This part-time position will be scheduled to work up to 20 hours per week. City Hall hours of operation are Monday - Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The work schedule is flexible and will be determined depending on the department's needs and candidate's availability. The preferred work schedule would be morning shifts Monday thru Thursday, 5 hours per shift. If the ideal candidate is not able to work morning shifts, the second preferred work schedule would be afternoon shifts Monday thru Thursday, 5 hours per shift.Under general supervision from the Building Official, the part-time Permit Technician performs a variety of general and specialized tasks to support the City's Building & Safety operations. This position serves as the primary contact for public inquiries related to permits and plan check processing. This role emphasizes clear communication and exceptional customer service.Examples of day-to-day responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:Provide customer service at the Community Development public counter, by phone, and via email.Multi-task in a fast-paced environment while handling multiple requestsIssue permits and process related paperwork timely and accuratelyPerform high-volume scanning and uploading of documents into the permitting system, ensuring accuracy and proper recordkeepingCoordinates plan routing with other departments and agenciesCalculates and collects permit and plan check feesOther duties, as assignedIdeal candidate:Maintain punctuality and adhere to the work schedule agreed uponCommunicate effectively, demonstrate active listening, and adapt professionally to diverse customer needs through verbal and written communicationHave customer service experience in a front-line and fast-paced environmentHave experience assisting customers over the phone with multiple linesBe highly team motivated, while having the ability to work independentlyHave exceptional attention to detailBilingual in Mandarin is highly desirableMunicipal government agency experience is desirableCertification as a Permit Technician is desirableTo learn more about this position, visit our careers page at:https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/montereyparkQualification GuidelinesEducation and experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.A high school diploma or GED; ANDOne (1) year of experience in a clerical or construction related field.One (1) year of permit issuance for a public agency is highly desirable.Licenses and certificates: Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.Knowledge, skills, and abilities:Knowledge of: office methods, practices, and procedures, including business correspondence, filing, and customer service dynamics; Knowledge of construction materials and building trades highly desirable.Skill in: operating office equipment such as computers and application software including word processing, desktop publishing, and spread sheets, type and enter data at a speed necessary for successful job performance. Skill in permit automation software is highly desirable.Ability to: read building plans; make mathematical computations; prepare correspondence; compile data and generate periodical reports; produce informational pamphlets for public circulation; provide effective and courteous customer service; perform work involving independent judgment and requiring speed and accuracy; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.Supplemental InformationApplicants with legal disabilities who require special testing arrangements must contact the Human Resources Department at least five (5) days prior to the examination date.
